October 2011 PPM's: The Zone Gets Bigger While The Game Gets Smaller

Anyone know if they have an HD channel? I'm wondering if they moved the conclusion of the game over to an HD channel, if they have one, and if so, did they make an announcement to that effect? I don't have an HD radio, so I wouldn't know.

They do. It's the source for 102.1 The Light. (W271AB, the 250-watt gospel station) Really that would be a pretty good option, the thing is pretty high on the channel 4 tower and covers Nashville pretty well. Plus, it's analog so most people actually have radios that'll pick it up.

I can get that one. I saw the billboard for it near downtown and tuned it in. But I'm sure that it would have signal issues. It wouldn't get out even as far as 102.5 does.

I believe they have an HD signal (or at least used to). In fact, that's what 102.1 is "translating" if I'm not mistaken. Even if they did play the game on their HD channel, unless you were sitting in Cumberland Furnace you probably wouldn't be able to hear it. My experience with HD reception seems to place much more emphasis on LOS, which isn't 102.5's strength.

Could you imagine if 102.1 actually got a higher rating than 102.5? Now that would not be a very good start to that "game"...

Since the "takeover" there's been several times where the transmission was spotty. Never heard static or noise beforehand.

But I'm totally diggin' FoxSports. What a breath of fresh air compared to overnite BSPN.

Still not completely sold on the 3HL move though. Kinda wish they were still on at noon.

Didn't like FSR at all a few years ago and haven't heard much of it since they've been back on the Zone, but one thing I have enjoyed this time around is the weekend pairing of Ben Maller & Tom Looney.

Great show, although they still sound a bit uncomfortable taking on an afternoon drive mantle. I suspect it will iron out though, because all involved at least state they know afternoons should be a bit different. Still the most glaring elephant in the homeward bound car is that the 3HL name hasn't been converted into something that is meaningful in the afternoon slot. As a standalone name 3HL is meaningless, and with the majority of the Zone listeners, 3HL still means 3 Hour Lunch. They need to change it to something like the 3 Hour League, the 3 Happy Lads, the 3 Hov Lanes (yeah, I can't think of anything good to make it work either guys), or just give in to making it 3HD for the 3 Hour Drive. Give the show a real name and at least they'd go a long way in helping the listener be more comfortable with it...

I think Hutton & Withrow have done a better job of settling in to their new time slot, and in fact sound better 12-3 than they did trying to hold down afternoons. They've settled in to a group of regular Zone guests and their show has a good identity. Also the type of show they've put together makes a good fit as something a bit different on the local menu between Wake-Up and 3HL. What is really sounding out of place now is the extra hour they throw in where Chad comes back at 6:00 on nights they don't have anything else going on. Yes I think they need to fill it, but it also needs its own identity.

Someone on Twitter suggested 3HL stand for "Tres Hombres Loco"

Apparently, the use of 102.1 for sports may not be as far-fetched as we once thought. I heard a Belmont basketball game on 102.1 this afternoon. And I can receive 102.1 all the way out here to Pegram, so it's a pretty strong signal! :)

they also put TSU football on 102.1...

Hmm, good idea. It has a good signal South and West, however East and North is AWFUL. Once you hit the Percy Priest dam on 40E it's covered up by 102.1 out of Lafayette. They fight pretty hard till the Nashville side of Gallatin. I've lived in Hendersonville and Old Hickory and for as long as I can remember you would get the translator OR country, depending on where you stand or if you move the antenna an inch.

That wouldn't surprise me, given that they have (or at least had) a billboard near downtown, and an urban gospel format. It also wouldn't surprise me if that station carried Austin Peay games, since they are also heard in Clarksville (101.9, according to their website).

I should correct what I posted earlier. I believe it was a Lipscomb game that I heard aired over that station the other day.

I heard a LIpscomb game on 102.1 as well.

Yes, the station is also on 101.9 in Clarksville. (2 bays atop an apartment building two blocks north of the Customshouse)

Oh, and it's also on a full-power analog station... WQZQ 830 AM...

Hutton and Withrow are indeed doing a good job. I F'n LOVE that they put John McClain on twice a week (or more). They also will read my tweets on air. LOL. 3HL won't read mine on the air anymore after I made fun of them for one of their shows back in the summer. REALLY ticked Clay off. (you know....the lawyer)

If they aren't talking about stuff I like I switch to The Herd. The ONLY show I like on ESPN radio.

I noticed that they are on the seven-second delay from the FM station. Do they have an AM station in Clarksville, too? I was thinking that the simulcast was of a Clarksville AM station.

Heard Trevecca basketball on there yesterday.

It surprises me that Cromwell hasn't put a simulcast of 102.5 the Game on an HD side-channel on 102.9. Kind of odd for 102.5 to have HD but not 102.9. I would think it would have been in iBiquity's best interest to facilitate 102.5 FM being put on a 102.9 HD side-channel, as that might have helped to spur HD radio sales to the SE of Nashville and down into Murfreesboro.

I'm sure it would be in ibiquity's best interest; however, spending $100k plus annual licensing fees for the possibility of attracting 0.5 listeners, not so much in Bud's best interest I suspect.....

They used to be on 1550 AM in Clarksville.

The FCC let them change the frequency to 830, the city-of-license to Goodlettsville, and the transmitter site to share one of WPLN-1430's towers north of town.
