October 2015 Ratings

http://ratings.****************/cgi-bin/rol.exe/arb001

WOR held steady, WINS, WABC and WCBS (AM) both notched increases. WOR will likely do well in the next period with the Mets in the Series.

What's remarkable is three of these four offering News or News/Talk, notched higher ratings than the FM signal of the NPR affiliate, which lost ground this time.

Still grasping at straws? WNYC-f is down 1.tenth share -right to where is was 3 &4 months ago. that is not considered a move.

if you had wanted to make an actual contribution here you might have pointed out the trend upward for WPLJ after years of torpid ratings.

Or, you might have pointed out the downward trend of WHTZ where we might be finally seeing the ratings reflect the fact that I can't find anyone under 30 or so that actually listens to radio in the last 7-8 years (since smart phone took hold).

WABC is up 3 tenths from a month ago, but still bouncing around in the demo rubble. Gone permanently are the 4+ that is had while Archie and Edith were alive. The fact that thing is only back to where it was four months ago in spite of the beginning of presidential campaign debates is also quite telling.

Thanks for the convenient link anyway.

I'm rather surprised that WOR saw no increase in share despite the Mets being in the midst of a playoff run during this book. Kind of makes you wonder if it's 1) people not listening to the Mets any more than normal or b) if the talk programming is that bad that it's holding back the station.

I took at look at KCSP 610, the voice of the Royals, and they actually dropped a point in October. Meanwhile in Chicago, WBBM, the new home of the Cubs, was #1.

Probably more "b" than "1" (and shouldn't that be "a"?). All those winning years the Yankees had on WABC and WCBS didn't bump those stations' ratings the way they did WFAN's.

I kind of wonder how many of WOR's regular listeners tune out when the Mets come on, and how many people who prefer other stations listen to WOR only when the Mets are on. If the numbers are about the same for talk or baseball, you could be dealing with two very different groups of people. I'm sure the demographic breakdown of the numbers that only the insiders and ad agencies are privy to would tell the story. I would guess that the baseball audience is slightly younger -- baseball skews old, but not as old as right-wing talk.

The playoffs were mostly night games. WOR's signal is a bit weaker towards NJ at night. The overall radio audience is pretty low at night. And perhaps New Yorkers aren't used to finding the Mets on WOR.

I wonder if simulcasting the Mets on a co-owned FM station would have helped. WBBM Chicago seemed to have benefited from the FM simulcast.

Having a Hartford/New Haven affiliate sure would have helped them in Connecticut. I'm not a fan of the team, but WOR puts in such a poor signal here (and manmade noise just makes it poorer) that I've been listening to the playoffs either on ESPN affiliate WUCS or on SiriusXM.

I'm sure that I heard a Mets game against the Cubs on 98.7, how is that fair to WOR? Didn't they pay to be the exclusive provider of Mets game audio in New York City?

KIIS in LA has a 5.1 12+ and kicking butt in the younger demos as they always do so I don't think Pandora and its equivalents are taking as much radio listening as is believed.
I've noticed that my friends who thought Pandora was the greatest thing ever have gone back to using fm radio more and have gotten bored of Pandora. Fm radio is the still the best option for the masses to hear the mass appeal hit music they desire in the absolute best sound quality possible. What you have in NYC is so many young adults, 3 shares of them on fm radio is what 1019 got when it was a real alternative rock station, who want alt rock using other sources, but that's not much of an effect on a z100 as Bieber isn't their cup of tea.

WOR has an exclusive on the regular season. Not the playoffs. ESPN Radio has the MLB contract, and does the playoffs and the World Series.

WEPN didn't get much of a Mets bounce either. However WFAN moved into the Top 10 in October.

AM radio needs to get rid of book plugging. The listeners are tired of hearing hosts plug their books. As far as the election goes, it's still early.

WABC and WMAL in DC both run local programming during the 5PM hour. I've noticed at least in the 6 plus, virtually every news talk station showed increases from the last book. Could the early political season have something to do with it? As mentioned, if this pace keeps up 2016 should be a good year for the talk format and keep the AM band viable.

Those Koch dollars are gonna be flooding in for AM (and some FM, I suppose) talkers from coast to coast. Who would've thought that conservatalkers would actually see a year over year billing INCREASE?

Good catch, CT. I posted before my first coffee hit the system.

Only in battleground states, I would imagine. The past two general elections, there was very little presidential advertising on radio here, as Obama winning Connecticut was a foregone conclusion as soon as he won the nomination.

I wouldn't make that assumption. They'd be spending money on the already-converted. Most agencies recommend against that.

If there's an obvious conservative nominee, the goal will be to attract the uncommitted voters, which means spending money in places other than conservative talk.

I recall KNBR in San Francisco (home of the Giants, 24/7 sports talk radio) doing well in the ratings in recent years that the Giants have been in the postseason. They also have local sports talk most or all of the day that can capture the enthusiasm of fans. WOR doesn't have anything to offer the average Mets fan (who are fewer in number to begin with, compared to the Yankees), unless they happen to be a fan of the station.
