October 2019 PPMs- WHYY up, The Breeze down

https://ratings.****************/content/arb007

Key takeaways:

Firstly, WIP-FM is king and we all know why. The birds. A massive 7.5 share.

Secondly, I want to jump down to 90.9 WHYY. A sizable leap from 2.9 to a 3.7. Not sure why, perhaps a fluke? Either way, not bad.

Thirdly, the Breeze 106.1 WISX. Losing a little steam? Not too drastic a loss at all, but notable. Down from a 4.9 to a 4.3. Still heard all around my area with lots of doctors/ dentists offices, all piping in the breeze.

Other various thoughts:

B101 continues it's rise to the top again. 6.1 to 6.6. Though perhaps it's time to work on their HD2. All 80s, and really quiet. Wouldn't mind a more 90s leaning mix.

WPPZ 107.9 classics still doing great. Such a nice treat to have a station like them and even better that they're making the most out of one of the weaker market signals.

A certain 50,000 watt AM station that shall not be named for fear of bringing you-know-who back is doing well. 1.5 to a 2.3.

WXPN 88.5 continues its downward trajectory, sadly. From it's height of success at a 2.4 july down to a 1.5 October.

And finally, a minor curiosity. The only HD2 to show up in this book is Radio 104.5's HD2 active rock with a .1 share.

Post your own thoughts below, as usual.

My thoughts:

--In the battle of CHR's... WTDY inches back on top of WIOQ. Knowing how... routine Philadelphians are (Action News theme, KYW ticker tape sound etc., B101 in general), I'm surprised how well WTDY has done at knocking Q102 down a bit. Then again, I've always felt that Q102 has been one of the weaker iHeart CHR's in the country. Can't put my finger on why, but it just never seems to have some sort of "wow" factor.

--WBEB nice rebound. WISX, nothing really to worry about yet.

--KYW- Are mid-3's the new normal when we aren't in winter weather?

--WRNB- Is the station making any decent money with that low of a number on that big of a signal?

--WRFF- I feel like a lack of REALLY strong Alternative music right now is hurting them a bit. Hopefully it will rebound (that's my personal opinion)

--WRFF HD2- Not the first time they've pulled a 0.1. Out of all the HD sides in Philly, that one sounds the absolute best (sound quality-wise.)

Good to see B101.1 re-gaining traction. I still really can't imagine of what caused the precipitous drop--especially since at the time it occurred, nothing much had changed on air.

WXTU dropped more than half-a-point but they're certainly not in a bad place.

WISX down to 4.3. Maybe it's just a fluke. Or maybe people are tired of hearing Chicago and Benny Mardones over and over again.

WHYY: Whaaaaaaat?!

WTDY jumped more than half-a-point to land just a tad above Q102.

WPHT jumped quite a bit. Is there anything interesting going on in the world of Conservative Talk?

Otherwise, it looks like most stations remained relatively flat.

It seemingly has to be the potential for impeachment driving some of the talk. But who makes up any increase? The funeral-home-and-sham-drug, 65-to-dead audience?

I'm assuming that the impeachment proceedings are bringing listeners of both political leanings to the radio to hear updates.

Haha. Yes, I was being facetious. Impeachment is bringing listeners to these stations the way Winter Storm Warnings bring listeners to KYW.

Now if the winter storms hit while the Eagles make a playoff run and congress moves ahead with impeachment proceedings, spoken word formats should be sitting pretty (said with tongue firmly planted in cheek).

That’s not remotely proof of any philosophy. Different strategies can have underlying business rationales predicated on a variety of factors.

Mediabase.

Mediabase is just a snapshot of your playlist, even though station subscribers get all kinds of analytics such as era maps, week to week and even station to station comparisons.

TDY plays more of the right new(er) songs along with much better gold. Don't get me wrong though, Q102 sounds way better right now than it did a few months back.

"Right" and "better" are subjective. It is quite possible that the playlist researches with those qualities against the target listeners of Q102 in their own proprietary music research.

WTDY is less fearful so it sound fresh. Chr suffers when it is programmed by first emotion fear.

And that would explain why WABC in New York was the nation's most listened to station under PD Rick Sklar when they waited almost till when songs were recurrent in other markets to go on them.

Granted, that was a different era. But the process of a song going from unfamiliar -> recognizable -> favorite is the same for each person, irrespective of the era.

And when a CHR targets 25-44 women, the movement of new songs will be slower.

Agreeing with others that this sounds a little subjective (and I think we all post some subjective stuff from time to time, even if we actively try not to) but it might be worth noting that in the 18-34 demo, WTDY leaped from 9th place to 5th while Q102 saw a slight decrease and ended up in 6th place.

Figuratively, it doesn’t get much closer (ties notwithstanding). There are really some interesting “sub plots” there.

I almost never hear either of those stations anymore. Intriguing though that Q was basically flat while TDY soared four spots.

Definitely. And where they continue to go will be interesting. Lots of layers to the onion.

Seems like they're ratings have been inexplicably volatile. Meaning a lot of other stations seem to show more month-to-month consistency. But whenever I do hear TDY (usually in an Uber), I don't ever notice anything materially different from what they sounded like any other time.
