October 2019 Ratings

https://ratings.****************/cgi-bin/rol.exe/arb011
WCSX with a big drop, but they remain number one. WNIC had a slight gain and remains in 2nd just a nudge ahead of WOMC. WRIF had a big jump and is at #4. I think this is the highest WRIF has been in about a year. WWJ is at #5.

I really think WCSX is benefiting from their use of digital billboards. When they display the song that is playing, this undoubtedly gets some people to tune in. It worked when I saw they were playing Boston recently.

K-Love taking over 102.7 undoubtedly impacted the ratings picture, but, since they don't subscribe, it's hard to see what was impacted. I doubt the move hit WCSX much and with both WNIC and WOMC going up, it's possibly a matter of they went up less than they otherwise would have had 102.7 not flipped.

WMXD, now listed as an AC format, is at #6. They saw a big drop. 105.1 and 95.5 are tied for #7. WXYT and WYCD round out the Top 10. The Ticket did see a bump, but it's still well below where they were before management allowed Valenti to open his big mouth.

WDVD saw a gain as did The Breeze. WLLZ sort of fell back to earth a bit at 3.3 and at 15th place. Still far better than they were before the flip, but some of the novelty may have worn off with listeners returning to WCSX.

The Lions, and maybe the return of the always wonderful 'Appliance Doctor' helped WJR back to about a 3 share. A good gain for them. Baseball playoffs made no apparent impact on AM910s ratings (they carry the ESPN feed of those).

Big question: Who flips to Christmas music first?!? I predict WNIC by November 6th.

Too late. Already happened last week.

"Only hours after trick-or-treaters sized up their Halloween stash, Detroit woke up to two Christmas stations as iHeartMedia AC WNIC (100.3) and Entercom soft AC “98.7 The Breeze” WDZH are both playing holiday hits."

I wonder if iHeart, which runs its version of the Breeze format on HD subchannels around the country, will flip those to ho-ho-ho. In Hartford, The Breeze airs on the HD2 of country WWYZ, having replaced iHeart's classic country format earlier this year.

There's no risk flipping an HD2. But sure, soft hits and Christmas are very similar. As we've said, there is no cost for iHeart to flip one of their stations to Christmas. The music & imaging are available to all O&Os. Just add egg nog & stir.

Much more similar than to what standard ACs are playing, for sure. I wonder if that's why Entercom is trying Christmas music on WDZH -- a more seamless transition from the usual sound of the station might convert some former WNIC listeners who try out WDZH over the next couple of months into regular WDZH listeners once it starts in with the soft pop again.
