October 6+ Ratings

Here they are.

Big jump for KZOK. Keep in mind that BJ Shea left three days before the end of this period.

It's also the first book for Emma. The format changed 9/4. This book began 9/12.

I'm not sure if it's a big move for KZOK. They are averaging 7.1 since May 24. Looking over the past six months 106.9 and 95.7 hit a peak. As we've seen with 98.9 it may be a few more months to figure out where 94.1 will sit in the ratings.

On the topic of KZOK, I expect them to cool off if we revisit these numbers a few months from now. As I mentioned in the other thread about BJ’s departure, I said that I’m not crazy about a lot of their programming (in general). I still stuck around every morning for BJ and Sarah, but it’s not the same anymore. Let’s see what they do next and see if they can hold onto their listeners.

I’m a little surprised to see KPNW still struggling a bit. They’re doing a good on the programming, and it seems like it would be in their best interest just to stay the course for now. 100.7 had favorable circumstances for a long time, so it’s an uphill battle to peal away some of their listeners.

As for 94.1, time will tell if their new direction is a good choice. It seems like they hopped on the soft AC trend, received favorable ratings for quite a while, but eventually started hit some bumps in the road. Their new format also seems a bit like a fad, but it may be exactly what they need.

The ones I'm eyeing are Hank 101.5 and KPNW if they were able to peel off 100.7's numbers a bit, I suspect one of those stations falls by this time next year, this market doesn't necessarily have the room for 3 country stations. (4 if you count KAYO)

Remember that just a year ago, the wolf was #1 in Seattle. Not anymore. So if Hubbard's goal was to take points away from the wolf, it worked. The wolf used to get a 6 share, now it gets a 4. Country is a more sellable format than AAA, and they have more than double the listeners with much less expense. Country sells well with AC. I don't see them leaving the format.

Hank is a different format. They're not playing currents. It's like saying The Jet is competing with Hits. They're different formats, playing different music. They're very similar to Jack for country. That was the intention. That's why they call themselves Hank.

I stand by what I said in April of this year that KPNW will be out of country by next Christmas. I was in the market last weekend and recorded them, and I am not impressed. I really don't understand the logic behind only running imaging every other song. To me, that makes for a very boring listening experience. Emma's numbers are unexpectedly low. I expected a gradual drop of about a share over the next year, not a two share decline all at once. Ouch! I expect KISW will benefit the most from the departure of BJ Shay at KZOK.

If you look at all the other markets where Audacy has rebranded hot ACs or completely flipped soft ACs to similar formats, those stations have fallen off a cliff. Bella in Portland, crushed badly after rebranding from the Buzz.

They're very different audiences. Soft AC median age is 51, and Hot AC is 41. 25% of the Soft AC audience is over 65. In Hot AC, over 65 is 8%.

As we often say, the goal in radio is not to look good in 6+ numbers. So they chopped off a lot of over 65, and now have to build up the younger demos.

At this point, there’s no flip that would be worthwhile (even if they were ready, willing, and able). Every other format is covered, with country being a sellable format that generate listeners. I think it’s far better to stay the course and focus on building the brand back up. It could be a little ugly for a while, but they might be able to do more damage next year when the prime months for country listening come around. They’re doing the right things.

We’ll see in the near future if KZOK takes a big hit. Years of having a great morning show have helped them dominate, but it’s a different game now. If you want rock music and care about the personalities, you’re probably listening to KISW.

Is the 'curse of 98.9' continuing?
To be fair to Hubbard, they’ve done a very good job with their recent format flips. It didn’t work out as intended with the previous KPNW, but it still felt like they put a lot of effort into it. It seems like they’re doing the same thing with 98.9 The Bull. It definitely has a chance.

The point I was making was, epecially in the Portland example, Audacy killed an established brand that did the same job as the new brand; for a lesser result.

I still remember when 96.5 was the cursed channel, at least they've been consistent even with different ownership. KXRX, KYCW, KYPT, KRock, KJAQ.
Before KXRX was KYYX (Top 40, then Modern Rock), and before that was KYAC-FM (Urban, although no one used that term that far back).
