October Numbers - Random Observations

Taking a look-see at the latest PPM 6+ numbers...

Kiss & Magic are still 1-2, but both are down sharply.

Nice bump for WROR, and to think they may blow it up for Christmas music soon. Or will they?

WZLX off more than a point, while WRKO & WTKK are up nearly a half point each in the run-up to November 6th. WAAF up slightly too.

WEEI-FM off sharply as Sox end while the Sportshub is in the mid 4's with the Pats in season. The war continues. WEEI-AM running ESPN debuts with a 1 share.

Amp moves into the top 10 with a half point jump. Half the ratings of Kiss, but building cume nicely. This could get interesting once they staff up and start promoting this station. Methinks billing is way up from the classic hits format.

WEEI probably lost some ground due to the AM being dropped, in addition to the abysmal ending to the Red Sox season. I also noticed 'ZLX's drop--perhaps some of their listeners have switched over to The Harbor? We can't see The Harbor's numbers, but that would be my best guess.

WEEI-AM wasn't even showing up the last couple of months (.1 or less.) I don't think it was a true simulcast, as 850 did break away occasionally for sports conflicts, so it would have been considered a separate station, just like 103.7 is. My guess is some of their upper demo listeners migrated over to the talkers for the tail end of the campaign season. 98.5 was basically flat, so they seem to be in mid-football season form.

I suppose it's possible that the Harbor just hasn't shown up yet. WFNX didn't buy the book at the end, but I'm sure Clear Channel has, so there's really no reason why they wouldn't be there....unless they don't have any detectable listeners at all, which I suppose IS possible.

As much as these numbers are fun to look at, they really don't mean much of anything. I'd love to see some breakdowns 25-54 Male, 25-54 Female in particular.

Or perhaps they're not paying for the largely meaningless 12+ numbers.

Stations are legally prohibited from releasing those figures under the Arbitron contract.

Why would CC buy the 12+ numbers for all their other Boston properties (including their AM's) but not their new FM? Doesn't make sense. I'm thinking the Harbor is a statistical no show at this point. Not good....

I think there's some misunderstanding about how Arbitron contracts work.

You don't "buy" 12+ numbers. Besides, PPM measures 6+.

I don't know the specifics of how Arbitron contracts work with acquisitions, but I'd guess that because CC Boston has access to the numbers for the entire market, why would they offer to pay more mid-contract to add another station? They already see the numbers for WHBA.

When you purchase the ratings data for your station, you see all of the breakouts for the market. Therefore, you see every station's numbers as compared to your own stations numbers.

Anything you see published online is just what Arbitron decides to release to the press, totally on their own. Just because no numbers are publicly released for WHBA sure doesn't mean that there are NO ratings.

You could air NOAA All Hazards radio and it'd still get ratings.

I thought some station might step up and challenge WROR today, but no one did.
WROR might be wise to stay with what they got.
They can't gain much more with Christmas music and they could lose some.
I see no "in-market" station that needs to switch as much as I like Christmas music.

There are revenue reasons for switching to all-Christmas as well as ratings generated ones. I can't believe that no one will flip to it in a couple of weeks. It's very possible GM has been selling holiday spot packages on WROR even before WODS switched to Amp. If WROR winds up with the Christmas franchise all to themselves (unless CC sacrifices the Harbor and/or CBS puts it on Mix this year) it will pay BIG dividends in both ratings and revenue for the December and "Holiday" Arbitron periods.

All conflicts were sent over to WRKO in order preserve the simulcast status and single line reporting by Arbitron.
Only the last week in October book accounts for WEEI AM carrying ESPN Radio. The first 3 were as WEEI carrier.
You should see even bigger decline for AM 850 when the next book is released.
