October Numbers

Brown Eyed Girl's fave station ;) holding steady at "hit 2...hit 2...hit 2...hit 2.."

What's the deal with KESZ? Down over two points since August. Are the usual
listeners just biding their time elsewhere waiting for the flip to Christmas music?

And how about KNIX? Something like #19. Since Bev Coyote Eva 95.5 seems
to be holding its own, will we see Cheap Channel finally give the Nearly Bald One
and his buddies an FM simulcast--as 102-point-five-fifty KFYI?

(Pssst: of course we'd like to know how the 25-54s pan out!)

okay, so Lumberyard 14~Forty didn't show in October. But at least KFWhyEye beat KT'R-FM. And Sports Parkinglot 6~Twenty beat both of them. So, here's the deal: http://www.radio-info.com/markets/phoenix

Sad news for our beloved Lumberyard indeed. :'( Maybe a new night-time transmitter will help boost those ratings!

As far as KTAR-AM Arizona Sports 620, those numbers are most likely inflated thanks to the Diamondbacks playoff run. Notice how the numbers have nearly tripled since August, about when valley sports fans found out that the D-backs were for real. Similar rise in local ratings can be seen across the country with local teams in the MLB playoffs. Look no further than KMOX in St. Louis where they smoked the competition with a 9.3 AQH, almost 4 points higher than the nearest radio station. I assure you those high ratings are tied to the St. Louis Cardinals miraculous playoff run through October.

Without any Suns basketball this month and the Cardinals in the toilet, November is sure to be a dire month for KTAR-AM, save for the occasional ASU football game every Saturday. My prediction, KTAR-AM's numbers will be down considerably next month.

Now if maybe Arizona Sports 620 could learn from these high ratings that valley listeners like live and local programming, perhaps those October listeners would be more likely to stick around (cue Mike and Mike in the Morning tape delayed from New York City ::)).

And here's another timely tip for TMISU...blow up The Peak and give the Valley its first FM Sports Parkinglot. Simulcast with Sports Parkinglot 6~Twenty and give them the B schedule when there is a conflict. Makes perfect sense to the Buckeye Boyz, but we're the ones driving a '76 Gremlin :p

New transmitter = possibly.
Night-time power = never going to happen, because it's technically not possible at thee canal-side Lumberyard.

Interesting ratings period. Eva is doing pretty good and it looks like it may be at the expense of KEZ. KZON is running away with the CHR crown, I don't remember ever seeing that much of a gap between them and ZZP. KUPD coming in last behind both the other Sandusky FM's, this rarely happens. Last but not least, anyone know how Pratt is doing on X? I would hate to see him be the final nail in the coffin in of our only alternative station. It may not be a great station but its the only one in town so I would hate to lose it. Maybe just lose Pratt, he's not a good fit.

It looks like KZON is serving notice on not only KZZP, but KMVA and KKFR as well. At this rate, maybe its time for 104.7 KISS-FM to go Rhythmic again.

Larry is too busy worrying about what KDKB sounds like to focus on his own station. Counter programming within a cluster is counter productive.

Mike & Mike are better than the old "local" morning show...which happened (for some strange reason) got promoted to afternoons. Chuck & Vince need to come back and (at least) do a weekend show on 620...

I've been saying that FM sports will come sooner than later. But The Peak is holding its own. Maybe another underperforming music station---one that does not have a signal on South Mountain.

The morning show has been coasting a bit as well. JH needs to get back to his listeners...leave the stuff between the wife and him at home.

Or maybe even CBS will decide to get into the fray someday. Seems very unlikely right now considering that their three FM stations are doing pretty well ratings wise, but who knows! CBS might want to increase their influence around here like they have in other markets and an FM Sports station would definitely do that.

On a side note, why is it that CBS as a whole has snubbed the Phoenix market? Pretty much every other major radio market has CBS as a major player, but here in Phoenix, their effort is subpar at best. I've also noticed that Phoenix is one of the few major markets without a CBS local website, i.e. Miami, New York, L.A., Denver, Chicago, San Francisco, Detroit, Seattle, Dallas, Houston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Boston, Minneapolis, Tampa Bay, etc. Why is that? I think radio in Phoenix would be a lot better if CBS were a bigger player around here.

SeeBS has been a seller, not a buyer since the economy went south. A great cluster would be the three SeeBS FM's and the two FM's and one Ancient Modulation station owned by TMISU. Two problems: the big price TMISU would want and what to do with Landfill 8~Sixty.

Ratings wise Phoenix is one of CBSs best clusters, at least it was in October. They are also very strong in Detroit but have underperforming stations in some of the markets you mentioned.
