OCTOBER (RATINGS)

Did any of you see the October ratings? Do you all agree?
What can some of the stations do or not do to improve?
What do you all like or dislike about certain stations?
Your thoughts? Any thoughts?
Have a good one

The charts we see here and at ****************** are things like 6+, 12+ but other demos like 25-54
are more important and I don't think we can see those. But there was a Herald article recently about
WEEI vs. Sports Hub--WBZ-FM still dominant in most slots but not nights, and the move to FM may
help WEEI in the long run

See this thread
http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?topic=200617.0
As I'd written:
>>WEEI made a big improvement in 25-54 and ranked #3 overall. Sports Hub #1, ZLX in between the two.
EEI first in 7-midnight/Sports Hub 10th. Mut & Merloni's ratings tripled. Finn proclaims it's an excellent outlook for WBZ-FM, and "the decision to move to FM is already showing signs of being a tremendously effective one for WEEI. "

In the 6+ I notice WKLB is doing very strong--I think they do well mostly with women

Refer to: http://www.radio-info.com/markets/boston
Again it's a 6-and-over chart. Kiss, WBZ, Jam'n, KLB, MJX doing well...

..oh, and note WEEI-FM. Apparently they fixed an error. Before the ratings given for it in Aug and
Sept were very low and I said "maybe they were going by the 103.7 from RI, which had those
calls at the time". Guess what: it has been fixed. Look on that page and you'll see the Aug and
Sept numbers are right--namely with WMKK 93.7 had been doing. The "Cume" looks pretty
similar, but the overall rating (again, 6+) was half-again as big as what they got under Mike.
In fact if you count the fact that WMJX and WKLB got the same rating, they basically tied for
fourth, then WEEI-FM came in at 5th. Higher than Sports Hub (9th) but again these numbers
are not the core demo, which I think is 25-34, 25-54, something like that.

In the future WBZ-FM has Pats and B's games and the various talk hosts while WEEI may well
be deprived of C's games if they can't settle that lockout, and spring training can't come soon
enough for them. It then comes down to talent. Now that they're on FM, can WEEI pry some
folks away from Sports Hub with their hosts?

In the 6+, WRKO and WTKK got fairly puny numbers. WXKS (AM) too, but showed improvement--
Severin? But earlier sunsets now and even though I can get 'em at night where I am, for
many the recep. will suffer. In "Cume" (cumulative), WXKS AM _doubled_ its Aug number, in Oct.

Also I'm sure WROR and WODS will do well when they soon switch to all Christmas/holiday. Criticize them if you must but people seem to love it and the cash register rings.

Really?
I tend to think Country 102.5 (WKLB) does better with the men? Because most times I listen, I always hear (men) callers. I do hear some lady callers, but most that I hear are men.
I could be wrong, if I am, please forgive me, but that's what I hear when I listen to them.
I'm not too crazy over Country music. If I listen to them, I like (Nice, New, Romantic, [Country] Music Slow Jams)

I always wondered whether or not country music was a cousin of conservative talk radio... ::)

I've been told it's more successful with women; maybe more ballads and less rockers?

From tunein.com:
>>The audience is comprised of 60% women and 40% men

Greater Media's page about its Boston stations says the same thing, "based on (Average Quarter Hour)
October 2009"

I wouldn't be surprised if country is skewing female across the country. Today's male stars are very easy on the eye for female fans and the female stars seem to be writing and performing songs that resonate with teenage girls and young women more than they do with men. The male, rural redneck stereotype of the country listener may have had a degree of validity back when Merle Haggard and Tammy Wynette were ruling the charts, but times have changed in a big way.

The country audience has been becoming more female and suburban soccer mom over the last 30 years, with the tipping point about the time that Garth Brooks hit it big. Which has made country a lot more upbeat than it used to be and noteworthy when an "If I Die Young," a song that could've been on the soundtrack of "O Brother Where Art Thou," not only becomes a big country hit but crosses over to AC and even CHR.

(Which leads me to wonder--as anyone done a dance mix of "If I Die Young" yet?) :)

A list of Top Songs on WKLB includes Taylor Swift (crossover), Darius Rucker (yes the Hootie and
the Blowfish guy!), Lady Antebellum, Keith Urban, Toby Keith, Blake Shelton, etc

http://www.wklb.com/music/topsongs.aspx

They have a Sun morning country oldies show and also classic country on an HD2. Probably, as has been
said, slightly more female listeners. And in both men and women, some have latched on to country
for its pop-ish sound (lately). Baby boomers might embrace it (myself, 49 yrs old, included) though lately I find I listen more to talk shows, sports, and even audiobooks. But I do dig country once in awhile.
How d'ya like me now! (Heard a few minutes ago on KLB)

WKLB is definitely a female-skewing country station, definitely a good idea in Boston. I believe that the reason that previous country stations failed in Boston was that they failed to program to women, they were trying to program to, as CTListener put it, "the male, rural redneck stereotype of the country listener", a profile that, while prevalent in many other areas of the country (even elsewhere in New England), hasn't existed in very significant numbers in Boston in many decades (if ever).

The whole delivery is somewhat like a hot AC station, which also skew to women, but with twangier music. It works for them.

Did you all hear?
Lionel Richie is about to have a Country Music album out?
They said it on Country Music Awards
He also performed
Not bad
Good stuff! Good stuff!!!

He's got Countryyyyy Soul!!!!!
He was good!!!

He had a hit called "Sail On" in the late '70s that was more country than most of what's played on country radio today. Not sure how he's going to do at radio now, though -- only George Strait and Reba McEntire from his age group still get any airplay. At least he won't be rejected because he's black; Darius Rucker is a star and all people care about is his strong voice.

KLB and them aren't really playing 'Country Music', it is just bad pop in a hat. There's nothing wrong with bad pop in a hat, to speak of, but it isn't 'country music' ::)

LAUROJRM said:
@CTListener, I always thought "Sail On" was a Motown music?

It was, but it had a country feel to it. Lionel actually worked with Alabama on a song, "Deep River Woman," several years later.

Trying to recapture some of that magic from 30 years ago when he wrote the big hit “Lady” for Kenny Rogers?
