Odd am radio reception, with Grundig mini 300

Well I love my Grundig mini 300. This radio is great with fm and shortwave. Am radio is horrid, from 530 to 1080 my reception is poor even on the locals and full time all power stations. The upper end from 1085 to 1700 has the best reception of locals and when I dxing. I think that the upper am band has the stations that lower power at night, why is my radio haveing such A hard time with lower bands? My 10 dollar sony radio is great all over the am band, picking up all the station that radio finder puts out for my location. Im in Halifax mass love this radio, but may put it up for sale if am is so poor.

i use a 300 to test out large AM loops. its plenty fine once yo put some signal into it. heard QRP guys on 1880

also you can open it up and adjust the IF trimmers and frequency ranges for all 8 bands with a screwdriver. for 9 bucks its one of the cheapest and simpliest (hackable) recievers you can grab short of buliding one out of spare parts

I have the little Grundig G8 and it's an amazing radio for the size.

The shortwave is great considering it's barefoot reception with only the little extendable antenna. I've gotten some great SW catches with it.

The FM is as good as my Sangean PR-D5 which says a lot.

The AM isn't as good as the Sangean but then again, my Sangean PR-D5 has a 200 mm ferrite antenna.

I'd say the AM reception on the G8 is still good as far as portable radios in general are concerned.
