Odd Audio Behavior in Audition 2.0

I cranked up Audition 2.0 yesterday to make a recording. Everything is HARD LIMITED at -6. If I really turn up the mixer master an occasional syllable goes to -3. Really flat-top hard limited.

I began to suspect my sound card might be going bad so I switched out cards. Same behavior.

Is there a VST that could have been accidentally turned on that controls dynamics LIVE while recording?

I still have Cool Edit 2000 on my machine so I went there and recorded. Same behavior.

Does the brain trust have any wisdom to offer?

Are you recording in mono? For some reason that I can't recall, when the soundcard only recieves one channel of audio, Audition flat-tops at -6dB, when recording a mono sum. Record a stereo file and see if you are only getting audio from one channel. If so, it should not be clipped. I'm not positive about this, but I think there's an FAQ on the Adobe forum involving this behavior.

If, however, you record a stereo file and get the same behavior, there's probably some sort of driver issue.

Thank you, Emmet. I got up this morning with a fresh, investigative mind (which was a bit numb last night!) and set about testing your observations.

It turned out to be a preamp/mixer issue that I don't fully understand. I had done some recording experiments with two mics and panned one mic fully left and one mic fully right. With gains and pans still set that way, I plugged in only one mic and recorded in MONO on Audition. The preamp/mixer was clipping... it was not a software or soundcard issue!

What is strange is that when I switched sound cards, the two cards recorded identically. I expected them to have differing input expectations which would result in a need to change the output of the preamp.

I am going to go back and play with all these scenarios later, but that can wait. For now, everything is GO.

Again, Thanks.

I guess the lesson is: If you get your rig tuned the way you like it, leave it alone. If it aint broke, don't fix it!

So true! I just couldn't resist downloading a program called Flyakite OSX. It does a wonderful job of turning the Windows environment into something that functions and looks identical to Tiger on Mac. It's pretty as hell, I'll give it that! But it also fouled up my system a bit and it eats up some CPU juice. I should know better than to play around with my DAW! Oh well, system restore for me! If I had a separate PC for web stuff, I would totally keep this on it though. God XP is ugly.
