In the car doing deliveries for the business the last couple of days. And I don't like to listen to the Ipod when I'm in and out of the car a lot (ruins the "flow"). So I usually flip between WILK and Marywood's VM-FM.
I kept hearing this series of SCRANTON DODGE spots where this "homey" guy is kind of telling a story, using odd phrases, and he has sort of a stilted delivery. Kind of grabs you and of course the commercials are emulating Paul Harvey. Not bad. But then I got to thinking...Paul Harvey has been dead for about 4 years now. I know he did his broadcasts right up until the end, but how many people under the age of say 45 or 50 actually know who Paul Harvey was? In other words, how many people actually "get" the concept of these commercials?
Now, I know everyone who reads this board knows who Paul Harvey is, but that's because we all worked in the biz at some point. But the last time I ever heard this guy even referenced somewhere else was on the Simpsons. All of the old folks at the Springfield Retirement Home had to hear Paul Harvey. Thoughts?
I will say this though. These commercials sort of reminded of those horrid "Bobby spots" VALLEY CHEVROLET used to run back in the 70's, 80's and 90's. Remember those? "Johnson residence, Bobby speaking." I remember working at the Rock when VC would occasionally bring those spots back. They were a pain in the "you know where" because they never rotated all the cuts evenly. They used to come on a big reel. There would be like 12 of them. And VC would want one to run 30%, and five others to run 5%, and 4 others to run 10%. So traffic would have to give all of them different numbers, or you'd have to make them rotate a certian way on an 8 and 1/2 minute cart. Just a production nightmare. And of course, "Bobby" was recorded years ago and the car copy always changed so all of the spots had at least 17 splices in them. Those were the days.
