Odd Question: WBCN's Microphones

Yeah I know, an off the wall post. But as a radio geek I'm wondering.

I was just browsing WBCN's website and was checking out some in studio pics and I'm trying to figure what kind of microphones they're using on air. They are definitley not an EV RE-20/27 or a Sure product, they look a little like condenser mics.

Nik or Paul do you know??

In the old studio they used a new Neumann I believe, and a few old school neumann's which had been rebuilt several times but they were amazing mics as guest mics I dont really remember what the main host mic was, Paul might know. I think the main air mic is a newer Neumann condenser but honestly i never made it to the new studio in the new building before I was "released"

speaking of mics... what's a reasonably priced condensor mike that I could use for my home setup?

They're Neumanns

WBCN didn't skimp on equipment at all. Their boards are amazing and everything's digital. Bracken has it dialed. My only complaint was that they use a processing that made your voice sound like it was chorused, or harmonized in your headphone mix. Takes a little getting used to.

But other than that WBCN does it right when it comes to good equipment.

Mic suggestion and processing

AL DUDE, NEUMANN tlm 103, YOU CANNOT GO WRONG WITH THIS ONE, it's actually used in some of the better VO booths Ive been in specifically soundtrack in Boston but it's a great home set up, I have it and it sounds fantastic!. Mine is in the dope black matte finish, it's a great great mic. you can get the bluebell a little cheaper I think but you cannot miss with the Neumann, I would actually go to guitar center especialy gc pro they'll get you a deal =better than sweetwater and musician's friend even. I was just looking through the Sweetwater catalog and theey have it listed at $999, I believe I got mine from GC pro for around 800 or so.

Also Paul is correct the processing at bcn has always been a tough gig Bracken has had his hands full. ooedipus always wanted bcn to be the loudest station on the dial even more so than Jamn which plays a lot more bottom heavy music. The problem with that is that there is always a bit of distortion when you're amping up the signal that high, while I was there oedipus had Bracken tweaking with it constantly. The problem also is if youre playing old analog recorded music alongside completely digitally recorded music there is bound to be some disparity.

Seriously though look into that neumann tlm 103 it's bad ass!, you can spend more even in the Neumann family but youre not going to get much more mic bang for that buck!.

GOOD LUCK!<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by NotoriousN-I-K on 03/22/06 12:28 AM.</FONT></P>

Unbelievable, Im speechless. The amount of effort that goes into these paranoid ramblings is shocking. The most shocking thing about this is that the man in question thinks that i am THE ONLY PERSON who has issues with him, everyone else loves and respects him. Just crazy!>

For a home setup I'd recommend the Electrovoice RE20. It's got such a tight cardioid pattern that it's very good at eliminating unwanted background noise that's typically very hard to get rid up in a home setup.

http://www.bswusa.com/proditem.asp?item=RE20

Also worth looking at is the Oktava MK319 or MK220. I use a 319 and like it.

http://sound-room.com/customer/home.php?cat=2&page=2

Oktavas are Russian made and for their price (typically ~$300) they are amazingly good...often described as "not quite as good as a Neumann, but close". Two caveats - they're good at picking up a wide range of sound, including unwanted background noise (Neumanns do this too) so unless your studio is VERY quiet, I wouldn't get these. The other problem is quality control - Oktava's is not so good, but you can get around that by buying from The Sound Room, they QC every mic.

Also FWIW, I got the $50 universal mic shock dampener and I wasn't impressed, although it gets the job done I suppose. I wonder if the Neumann U87a shockmount will fit a MK319 or 320?

Finally, with most studio mics, but especially Neumanns and Oktavas - get the foam mic coozy. Otherwise you'll have popped p's everywhere. An RE20 mic coozy will fit on an Oktava and it's about $20 - worth every penny.

Re: Mic suggestion and processing

Wow, I wouldn't have thought it possible to stalk an intangible object like a message board, but Mr. Vigglesworth seems to have found a way to manage it. He is even stalking the mods and site owners!

Tornadoes don't hit cities. They hit the trailer parks around cities.

I'm learning....

Beware of the green sky!

And cheap shots are all one can take when one's not making NY money.

Thankfully the cost of living here allows me to take 'em in excess!!

:)

Depends on the amont of $$$$$$ you want to put out, RE 20 is definately cheaper but I dont think you can go wrong with the Neumann, over the RE 20. Depends on yoru uuses too, RE 20 is more uniformly used in on air studio compared to the tlm 103 but I think the TLM is a better mic for recording voice and thats usually what yorue doing with a home set up, recording rather than live breaks.
