Odd Toronto's AM 1010 Newstalk is relayed on SW 6070

Heard this one earlier today,, signal fuzzy but steady, several mentions of Newstalk 1010, but no mention of their SW 6070 at all....

This one has been around for many years. They won't mention 6070; it's for those likely in the remote areas where 1010 won't make it.

It's also a hobby of sorts because the Ontario DX Association (ODXA) issues (issued?) the QSL cards. On 6070 they *did* ID once an hour, using ODXA mentions, maybe 15 min. past the hour.

Somebody correct me where I am wrokng. Thanks.

While living in California in the early 1960's, I got a QSL card from CFRB listing both 1010 and the SW frequency. I think the SW service was originally started in the 1930's or 40's to provide service to the remote areas of Northern Canada.

I believe the call letters for CFRB's SW relay is CFRX.

There are several other SW relays of Canadian MW/FM broadcasters, including 6160 CKZN (relays CBC Radio 1, CBN St. John's NL), 6160 CKZU (relays CBC Radio 1, CBU Vancouver BC), 6030 CFVP (relays 1060 CFMX, Calgary AB) and then there's the CBC North SW broadcasts.

I seem to recall that both Montreal and Halifax, Nova Scotia had SW relay broadcasting at one time. Anyone remember those?

Montreal & Halifax relayers are history, but they were around for quite some time. From south FL I never got either one of them well, if at all. I had to have a "phone QSL" from the Halifax one, as I listed the songs they played.

There was also (RIP) the 10-watter relaying CKWX Vancouver on 6080. Cannot remember the calls. I was stationed in Alaska & *might* have caught it, borrowing a co-worker's Hallicrafters unit. (I sure miss DXn from Alaska!)

CFCX was on 6005 kHz @ 500 watts relaying CFCF 600 from Montreal. Heard it occasionally in the 70's.

It was CKFX, and I heard it once many years ago in Texas. That was a very tough catch!

I snagged a very weak shortwave version of CHNS, Halifax, a couple of times here in the Chicago area in the early '90s. I believe it was on 6030, but I stand to be corrected. In the summer of '94 or '95, I was attending a meeting on Cape Cod, where it put in a rather decent daytime signal. Especially for 500 watts IIRC. It was a good listen, too...with an oldies format.

Montreal was another matter. For whatever reason, I never heard it, but I tried more than a few times.

As for CFRX, this one has been an easy daytime catch in these parts for about as long as I can remember.
