ODE TO BILLIE JOE

Does anyone remember what Bobbie Gentry did to promote her one and only hit?

Made TV appearances, mostly. Music shows like American Bandstand, Shindig, and Hullabaloo were big at the time. Unlike today, record companies promoted singles rather than albums. Artists that had several hit singles could go on tour. A "one hit wonder" couldn't do that.

Actually she toured a little bit with Glen Campbell, and scored a country hit with him in duet on the Everly Brothers Classic "All I Have to Do Is Dream."

Then she tried a comeback in Christian music...then faded away from the public eye.

Later....

The right answer is that she had sex with as many music directors of as many top forty stations as possible to get her record played.

One of the great story-telling songs of all time. You couldn't dance to it, but it made for a great pallette for a lazy hot summer day.

A-It wasn't funny and B-If you're gonna publish a statement like that, you'd better have some proof or else it's libel!

I don't recall anything she did in particular to promote herself, but I do recall WMEX in Boston having a contest (to win her album, I think) by being the person who could write the initials "BG" the most times on the back of a postcard. (How/why do I remember this stuff?!)

I agree with "A" but you'd have a hard time proving libel in a court of law with a defendant who gets sworn in as "RADIO TRUTH" :)
