We are about 2 weeks from having the new arbitron books for market 188 anyone here care to take a guess one what the top 5 stations will be? A few things have changed the demize of KMMZ la mera mera and a few format tweaks on a few stations but other then that the market is the same! So i leave it out here for discusion who will be number one? What stations will drop and what stations wont even make the list

1.Kmrk They have new djs and a new Pd and have refreshed their image!
2.Kqlm um.. they have changed image addes Jingles new dj Line up
3.Kbat They are still new and i see them pushing their station on the streets all the time
4.Kicks Country is still big in West Tecas
5.B93 The change will bring in new demos and will finaly be in the top 5 aggain

Well, I didn't want to start a whole new thread and forgive me for changing the subject.
I'm going into the radio field once I graduate college and I'm interested in the Midland-Odessa, TX market.
I won't be going anywhere for a few years from now, but I might as well start looking into places I like, right ?
Anyone know the good, the bad, and the ugly about the area?

Why would you want to go to Odessa/Midland? That area is the arm pit of Texas - and the radio stations exemplify that! :-X

A lot of places qualify for armpit status. I worked the "Petroplex" many years ago and had a blast. Wish I could tell you something recent, Carlos...but if YOU like a place, go for it!

Yeah, go for it! Stations in Odessa/Midland are always looking for $6-7 an hour part-timers. Good luck getting anything more than that! 
ok, well that kind of half-way answered what I was wondering. are there only small local owned stations? or larger companies ie. Cumulus, Clear Channel, Infinity..uhh..CBS Radio ?
and while I'm thinking about it, I don't think I have asked this on any of the other threads, but..I've heard alot of negativity towards the radio giants (CC, Cumulus. etc) should I try to go into a more regionaly owned/local station and not even bother with the larger ones ? I will have a bachelors degree in broadcasting in a few years, but I've also heard that a degree won't help in some areas, it just depends

Cumulus is NOTORIOUS for treating their employees like $hit, working them to death, and not paying worth a flip. And Cumulus wants to be Clear Channel. The only other radio group in Odessa/Midland was once owned by Tommy Vascicou (Encore Broadcasting)...not sure who owns them now. The market in general doesn't pay, because the market doesn't have to - there are plenty of people willing to work for next to nothing - that goes for the entire economy. If you are going to have a bachelor's degree, think of a city you would like to live in that has a future - West Texas is about as dried up as the oil wells in Marathon. Do you have any desire to live in Austin or San Antonio? If you can get your foot in the door in a market in an area with a future, you will be much happier later on in life. JMHO 8)
well, I'm already from "small town USA" over here in NC, and I'm not so sure I want to make the big jump stright from here, to ..say..Houston. I've been to Texas a few times and I like it there.

The truth is Cumulus and other big companies are paying less these days. A lot less. In houston CBS is in deep doo doo. Cumulus is paying a fraction of what Susquehanna was paying. Same thing for Indianapolis and Dallas.
I think CC has made some positve strides recently to pay a better wage but overall radio as we knew it in the 80's and early 90's pay wise especially outside of mornings has dried up. There ARE exceptions but in due time those exceptions will get hit too.

I think once I get done with college, I'm gonna be ready for a fresh start. So, I've been loking into markets in Tex. So far I've heard good and bad things about different areas.
Austin - Very nice place for young people, good size city, but a bit pricey.
San Antonio - Nice, larger city, lots of things to do.
Houston - It's like a "heat bowl". Quite hot and humid at times (been there, and I understand that concept) Does anyone have any good things to say about the area ?
San Angelo - It's an ok college town, but nothing bad, that I've heard.
Midland/Odessa - Fine to visit, but not to live. Boring and desolate.
Out of the extensive research I have been doing over the past while now, I'm really starting to like the SA and Austin region. But for someone right out of school, with a degree, wanting to get my foot in the door and needing to make a little cash (sarcasm) what's next ? Any ideas or info of people who knows about what I'm talking about ?

Don't focus so much on being right out of school. That doesn't really matter these days. If you have, say two markets you're interested in, do more research into the radio stations and start sending them your packages. I know a guy in Dallas who had NO radio experience and stepped right into a station there. It's more being in the right place at the right time than having experience. You have to be willing to pay your dues - do whatever it takes to get into the station. Honestly, IMHO, radio stations no longer care as much about experience as they do cheap labor. Austin and San Antonio probably aren't as expensive as North Carolina - at least there are no state income taxes in Texas. You might have to get a job doing something else before you get a radio gig, but the main thing is being there because it's all about timing. By the way, IMHO, San Angelo is about the same as Midland/Odessa, only smaller.
