Of Interest To Those In The Ottawa Area......

Those in and near Ottawa may be interested in the fact that CHRO-5/43 (recently rebranded "A-Channel Ottawa") has announced their schedule for "midweek" (read: games on nights other than Saturday) local telecasts of Ottawa Senators' games for the upcoming 2005/2006 season (the link above is to an Ottawa Senators' press release).

The reason I am posting a link to the CHRO schedule of Sens' games is that the Ottawa Senators are the only Canadian-based NHL team (and one of only about 10 of 11 out of the league's 30 clubs) to have local over-the-air telecasts. If my memory serves me correct, just five or six years ago, 25 or so of the league's 30 teams (including all six Canadian-based clubs) had local over-the-air TV coverage of at least a few games. This year, I believe only ten or eleven teams (including the Sens) will have games on local over-the-air TV.

Of course, all six Canadian-based NHL teams will appear frequently on CBC's "Hockey Night In Canada" (I suspect the release of the HNIC broadcast schedule will have to wait until the end of the CBC lockout), but except for Ottawa, the HNIC package is the only over-the-air TV coverage the Canadian-based NHL teams will get this coming season.

Technically then, the Senators have local coverage on two stations - CHRO and CBOT - which is quite good. Also the Leafs are seen on CBLT (as well as the rest of the network), so I would consider that a local telecast.

So, here are the Canadian NHL teams from 1999 and which stations I think they were shown on. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Vancouver - CIVT
Edmonton - CITV
Calgary - CICT
Ottawa - CBOT/CHRO
Montreal - CBFT

As for Toronto, back in the late 90s they were seen on quite a few stations. In all I believe CBLT, CFTO, CIII, CKVR, CFMT, and CHCH had Leafs' games at one time or another. I do remember that during the 97-98 season games were on CHCH from October-December, then CFMT after that; CBLT and CIII had some games, and the rest...either CKVR or TSN carried them. Can't remember for sure.

CICT regularly bounced the Flames games to RDTV. The final season that the Flames had OTA coverage...7 games in total were broadcast. RDTV aired 5 while the last 2 aired on then-Calgary 7 CICT-TV.<P ID="signature">______________
