% of Revenue

Lots of talk last week about NFL players getting 60% of all league revenue in the new collective bargaining agreement. As I look at my month end financial statement we spend more than 60% on salaries and employee benefits (19.2%)monthly. Anyone have any idea what the local air staff make as a % of revenue in Dallas? Only for the local folks, not for the money spent on Limbaugh, Hannity, et al.

I haven't done financial statements in years, but I'd guess Infinity/CBS's salary ratio last June was 94% of revenue (Chapman, Stern, Brinkman, Barnett, Tempie still on payroll.) But with the recent changes, the stockholders now KEEP 94% of the revenue for themselves. 1% goes towards talent now, and 0% goes into benefits (since part-timers get nothing.)

(Note to CBS: Dump Kurt if you want to pocket the remaining 5%.)

Those poor NFL players. I remember the olden days when nearly all the Dallas Cowboys had to keep second jobs to stay afloat. Dave Manders sold time for KBOX and did real estate on the side. Dan Reeves worked for Gifford-Hill Concrete. Ray Renfro had a dry-cleaning business (Mike's dad, I don't mean Mel.) Pete Gent and Bob Hayes had a graphics company. Lee Roy Jordan worked in sales for a moving company. Bob Lilly sold insurance. Don Meredith worked for American Express. Lance Rentzel and Buddy Dial sang.

Now it's the radio people who have to take on those kinds of second jobs to make ends meet each month.

Yes, but that was back before TV money got ridiculous. With the owners now raking in billions from the network deals, things have changed. Team merchandising has also added many Megabucks to the pot, not to mention product endorsement contracts with individual players.
