Off Frequency on 1290?

For a number of weeks, I have been hearing a heterodyne on 1290 at night. It peaks N-S from the Chicago area. I have not tried to measure the frequency, but I estimate that it is at least a couple of hundred Hz. Does anyone else hear this?

I've been hearing it the last few weeks here too. It measures 1289.7 and other DXers seem to think it's coming from WKLJ in Sparta, WI. I haven't been able to pull any audio from it to confirm but the offset freq has made a mess of 1290 here. Maybe someone in Wisconsin could confirm and solve this mystery.

Thanks kilokat! I hope someone can confirm whether Sparta is the culprit. If so, I will contact the station and let them know.

I have reported off-frequency operation at least three times previously to various station owners. In every single case, they were very cooperative and corrected the problem. That's a win-win situation because the interference goes away, their own listeners get a better sounding signal, and they avoid an FCC citation. I have found that if you're polite and sound like you know what you're talking about, they will usually pay attention.

I'm also picking up a runaway het during sunrise/sunset (but not during the night) on 1040 that fluctuates up and down between about 1040.2 - 1040.4 You can hear it rise and fall during 20-30 second intervals. I managed to isolate the audio on this one and heard gospel music but no ID. Perhaps daytimer WJTB Ohio? Anyone else hearing this one?

The frequency tolerance for AM Broadcast stations in the U.S. is ± 20 Hz, and for FM Broadcast it's supposed to be ± 2 kHz (that makes sense, the FM broadcast frequency range is 100 times higher than the AM/Medium Wave broadcast band)

Yes, I have heard the 1040 het consistanly for several weeks. At least a few weeks ago was the first time it got my attention. I notice it while driving to and from work, but havn't done any serious evening DX at home lately, so I don't know if it is just a "skip" time situation. I'm not near my WRTH, so I'll ask the question. Is there a Cuban on 1040?

I have heard several hets recently, one on a regional frequency. I believe 1290 was the r frequency, but I'm, not near my notes and my memory isn't so good.

This may make me want to look for hets. Late afternoon last week, I heard a high pitched tone along with local WZHF 1390 Arlington, VA 20 miles away and kicking in an SSB mode I could hear a faint talking underneath WZHF. I think I heard either WKPA 1390 Lynchburg, VA 126 miles away or

I pushed the post button too soon by mistake. I was trying to finish the sentence:".. Lynchburg, VA, 126 miles away or WRSC 1390 State College, PA 143 miles away. Didn't get a chance to ID the station; too weak to be listenable."

I know I have a weird sense of humor. but certain words and phrases stand out. For instance, what if you walked into a crowded room somewhere and asked, "Is there a Cuban on 1040?" I bet people would look around, and you might actually get some answers.

"Dude, I saw a Cuban on 1040 the other day. I don't know where he got it, but, man, he was having a bad time."

(OK. I'll go away now.)
