"OFF" Goes WDBO

T

Talknet

Guest
As I travel thru the Orlando area I listen to 'DBO for news and traffic. In any of the various markets I travel to for business purposes I have my favorite stations.
At WDBO, you can absolutely bet on it when that female newscaster "Elizabeth Arenas" comes on, "OFF" goes my radio.

She "CHEWS" her words. She has diction problems. She over pronounces words. She needs to spend major league time in a small market working with a knowledgable PD to rid herself of these problems.

Compare her to any of the other WDBO female voices. No, you can't do that! There is NO comparison. She is terrible!

I'll continue to listen when I'm in the area but when she's doing a story, forget about it, I'm history!

You write like your genuinely upset about this particular person...I am not disagreeing with you but what I would like to write is that some would argue that Orlando is a small market. Furthermore, I am certain that if you noticed this particular problem so has the PD...regardless like a lot of radio stations in Orlando they are trying to reach Hispanics; this lady sounds like she is Hispanic and like most Latino persons when they learn a new language they learn the proper form of most words and therefore are very susceptable to over pronuciation that doesn't always translate correctly to radio. Of course, this is conjecture and by no means facts. I am simply providing a possible explanation to why they have her on the air and why she sounds the way she does...I believe an old staple like DBO should be applauded for allowing minorities on their air ways. However, for listeners I also see their problem with it, especially a New / Talk station.

Elizabeth was born in Bronx, New York. Her parents are from Santiago, Chile. She is a UCF graduate with a B.A. in Radio-Television with a concentration in broadcast journalism. She minored in English writing, was on the Dean's and President's list, and was a reporter and the assistant news director for WNSC.

Elizabeth Arenas is an excellent reporter for WDBO. Her reports are well-written, and yes, she has a Spanish accent. She does not butcher
the English language, such as by using "ax" or "axe" instead of ask. She speaks proper English. Hopefully, she will be here for a long time.

Bad thread topic used in the subject. Try writing in what you're really getting at next time, will ya?

I don't really see what Elizabeth's stat line has to do with anyone being critical of her on the air. Furthermore, I don't beleive the earlier post was critical of her education or past accomplishments. Here is a fact of life, if you work in media be prepared for people that are critical of you, I am certain that she's a professional, it shouldn't bother her or anyone else one bit that someone thinks she can use improvements or flat out doesn't like her on the air. I once knew a man that couldn't stand Tom Brokaw and another that didn't like Peter Jennings...If these legendary news anchors can be criticized why not a local radio reporter? We all know that DBO is not going to hire a dumming but maybe there is room for improvement. I guess once you throw in the race factor people get really defensive and in some instances they should be but race, education or accomplishments has nothing to do with this thread.

FYI - I agree could of thought of a better title...everyone tries to be to witty about these blogs

Which means what?

Well, to get specific.. What I really meant was... "Off" Goes WDBO was used in the subject line, which generally would suggest the post had to do with WDBO going off the air at some point or something along those lines. The thread actually turned out to be a slam against a station reporter. Would have been better to just have based the subject line on some relevance to the post instead of what was chosen. Didn't think I'd have to explain that one.

forget all that noise, she is smoking hot. i see her everyday, she puts a lump in my throat, and i love how she says her name. DBO could use that ethnic feel. So stop, there are those of us who cant wait to see her everyday. I think helps help hippen up Turner a bit.

This is radio, nobody cares what you look like. The best female pipes I ever heard belonged to Catherine Johns at WLS in Chicago in the mid 80s. She weighed 400 pounds. Nobody cared.

Elizabeth might be smoking hot, but her delivery just isn't. Yes, its something she can work on and overcome if she wants to, but right now I agree she's tough to listen to.

Let's all say this together kids...."Restraining Order"

I should have suspected this! My comments regarding this voice has NOTHING TO DO with ethnicity! But of course, the so-called politically correct nonsense just has to come up. Being Hispanic, Mexican or however you want to term this HAS NOTHING to do with my observation. As I recall, WDBO used to have a very qualified and easy-to-listen-to Hispanic female newscaster in the days of Jeff Slater. Both Slater and that newscaster moved over to 540. She was EXCELLENT! Slater was EXCELLENT! This girl had excellent delivery, very good enunciation and was a pleasure to listen to. A complete opposite to Elizabeth.

Elizabeth may be an excellent employee...dedicated, easy to work with and may possess all the qualities a good employee should have but as constructive criticism, she needs a coach and teaching PD to eliminate the problems. Let me get personal here...many years ago before I had anything to do with broadcasting I sought professional help to eliminate a very heavy, pronounced blue collar northeastern accent. Most of it is gone but sometimes shows in phone conversations or on the air. Then later, at one of our stations I inherited a female newscaster who had some of the same problems I've observed with this problem at 'DBO. This girl was well educated, dedicated and had a much better ability to deal with people than I did! I took her aside and we went over her delivery and almost over night, once she realized how different she sounded compared to other females, she improved dramatically! Gone were the words like: "mounttt-tton", "Pittsss-burggg" and all the rest. These are typical beginner "over pronounciation" problems. I showed her how to talk just a little lower in pitch without over doing it. As I said, the results were dramatic.

We should NEVER assume we have reached the pinnacle of performance, that there is no room for improvement and our skills have peaked. As long as we are alive, and I include myself in this also, we should be open to improving what we do and how we do it. We may see Tiger Woods win a tournament. Do you think he takes the next few days off lounging at his swimming pool? Or maybe he just sleeps in and gets up at noon, one hour before tee time on Thursday? No, he's in there practicing, getting consultation from his advisors, learning more, eliminating problems. "Advisors". A good PD is not only a supervisor but a coach. A coach watches films. A good PD listens. A good PD educates.

Be well!

Now that wasn't nice, i just mentioned that i think she is beautiful and talented. Also, here is a shocker, she is NICE, in a radio station! how rare is that?
