Will, it says, "Recommended: College Degree," Not "required..."

And 'Pusher, all it says is you need to help with production as well as jock. The duties it lists are all pretty basic radio station skills. Nobody does "four and the door" anymore... Certainly not in VT/NH.

I swear I think people complain just for the sake of griping. ::)

Im not griping just for the sake of it. Im saying you need to be a great on air talent, do promotions, production, selector and everything else.....Im just saying that in radio today you HAVE to do it all and more. Gone are the days of just being an air talent or a promotions person.....Just stating a fact!

"Wow! should I also know how to cook, clean, gut fish, climb the tower to repaint it, predict weather, sell, write copy, and of course do 8 other peoples jobs?"

Sounds like griping to me.

Of course...the job description doesn't include the fact that the transmitter tower has to be painted twice a year? Also, in the event one or more of the 4 stations goes off the air during the winter months...the successful applicant will have to perform live broadcasts directly out of his or her apartment, condo or home...24-7! :p

argytunes

Hey man, I hear ya. I've worked in the smallest of markets, and I know the one-man-band routine very well. I was actually doing *repairs* on the transmitter, replacing modules in the MW5A!! And I have no electronics knowledge beyond the Heathkit set I built 35-years ago. I was also chief operator, production director, news director, program director, lightbulb replacer, snow shoveler... you name it.

And I wouldn't trade a moment of it.

Sorry if I sounded accusatory...

in college radio we do it all as volunteers ;)
thank you VSC for letting us run a 3,000 watt radio station
board, phone, production, underwriting, Music directorship on what to play, automation etc.
about the only thing we don't focus on is the engineering perspective except basic things like switching CD players out when they die ETC... I as well spend my own money on songs and items I might need for my show that we don't get from record labels. You guys may say what you want about it and I am sure some of you may bitch but remember I am just putting in my thoughts

argy gets it.........have the rest of you ever worked in small market radio? You really do HAVE to do everything, its just a fact of the job.

oh to be young again and have the passion to WANT to do everything............ Jamie my dear I remember doing that in school, BUT when you've been in the biz over 10 years over 15 years, some over 20 years, its not so fun anymore doing it all. Email me and tell me after you've been on the job for 5 years and have to explain to your family why you have to leave during christmas because the voice tracking system crashed and you have to go in and be on the air for 10 hours. Or tell you kids your gonna miss thier birthday party because your 1 salesman sold a remote and you have to do the promotions and air talent for it. Im not bitter Im just telling you thats how it is in MOST small market stations. I see why people get out, but Im here for better or worse!

your right I have not been in the biz that long,
but I will say doing holiday shows can be fun. three years ago my show landed on easter sunday but I didn't want to miss a week so I left the easter dinner in CT early to do what I love, be on the radio. but yeah I know that feeling a bit.
