I listened to Sid Mark's show for a couple of hours today for the first time in a while. One definitely can not take away Sid's expertise and knowledge, but the show definitely sounds a little dry compared to its hey day on WWDB. He plays many of the same songs (even at the same dayparts) as he did a few years ago. I would like to hear more of a variety, and more live performances. No doubt Sid has these in his collection.
But what irks me the most about the show is the "often imitated, never equalled" clause. Who is imitating him? Just because someone else is playing Sinatra doesn't mean that they are imitating anyone. I used to listen to Jack Pinto's Sinatra show on WBUD Sunday mornings because there were less interruptions. I never thought he was imitating anyone. He was just playing music like 1000's of other DJ's in the world do.
Blavat does the same thing with his line, "often imitated, never duplicated." Who is imitating Blavat? I don't know anyone else who plays 5 bars of a song and then cuts it off over the lyrics to play a jingle. And who else plays 4 different versions of the same song all at once? No one. So this idea of others "imitating" you because you may have been around for 50 years is nonsense IMHO. After all I'm sure Sid and Blavat were both influenced by others in their younger days.
That said, it is important to note that I have a great deal of respect for both personalities for their many contributions to the radio business over the years and I've definitely enjoyed many hours of their programs.
