OGL, A to Z

For those of us who don't care for the limited playlist & repetition on WOGL, I tuned by today and found they're playing 'every song in their library' by title A to Z. So today I heard every song starting with Baby, Boogie, etc. The library doesn't seem to include anything outside their '60's - '70's catalog or those in the weekend speciality shows library, but it's much more interesting and diverse than the usual format. But you end up with songs like "Alone Again Naturally" and "Billy Don't Be a Hero" on the same day ("Manic-Depression Monday"?). This is suppoded to air through Labor Day. Anyway, it's worth a listen more than the same old, same old.

That sounds interesting, because every time I tuned them in for the past 20 years I hear nothing but Motown, Soul and R&B, and the occasional token BI or South Philly wedding hit, can we hear Stevie, Diana, Levi and the others just one more time. I have to stop by 98.1 once again.

yea but they say that if they have it they are playing it.they have 50's music and they are NOT playing any 50's music.so how can they say they are playing everything they have.when they are not.looks like I am going to turn back off oldies 98 and put back on my sirius radio.

WMMR will be playing another A-Z. WMMR does it a couple of times a year. Whose will take longer, WMMR or WOGL?

I know for a fact, they have, Here Comes the Night - Them and I Can't Stop -Honeycombs plus thousands of Rock titles but I bet you won't hear one of them.

I think I'd rather hear the old "History of Rock and Roll" with Robert W. Morgan, which many of the CBS owned oldies, er...Classic Hits...or whatever it is now, ran back on Labor Day weekend in 2004. I was out in California that weekend, and heard much of it on K-Earth 101. I'm glad WOGL exists, but it really is a boring station to listen to. The reincarnated WCBS-FM kicks the crap out of it. And, last weekend, I was traveling in Connecticut and Massachusetts, and heard the best sounding Oldies...er, greatest hits of rock and roll, station that I've heard in a LONG time, 102.9 DRC-FM in Hartford. There was no need to button punch or scan the dial...every freakin' song they played was a good one! They even played some pre '64, and (this is supposed to be the death knell) '50's tunes too! First time I've enjoyed listening to an oldies station in years!

I've been listening quite a lot the past few days, more or less to see what is and isn't being played in this "everything in our library" A-Z special that OGL is doing. I agree that it is defintely better than their standard offering. I also agree that I'm not hearing anything pre-64 being played. Example: this morning they were up to the T's. When it came time to play "Twist and Shout" they, of course, played the Beatles version. But the original 1962 Isley Brothers version was nowhere to be found. (Well, not exactly: Harv did give the Isleys lip service after playing the Beatles).

Hey this A to Z weekend is a joke at 98. There r no oh wow hits at all in this thing. Now if u r gonna play "EVERYTHING" in your music library that would include the forgotten 45's big ron plays which r only forgotten cause forgot them & the doo wop holiday plays. Last i look they all play off the same computer so u can't say oh they aint in the library. This is one of the few times WOGL could actually say screw format & play it all. They should've made it an A to Z weekend playing "EVERYTHING" we ever played in our close to 20 yr history as WOGL. This is just an I Love The 70's weekend mixed in with a few motown/soul hits. Also is anyone recording this weekend at all?

I agree that the idea is good, but their execution isn't. That station used to have a library of oldies music that had everything literally from A-Z. For this special A-Z event they could have given everyone a break and maybe started with 1960 so there'd be some pre-British invasion gold to help balance out the excess of disco and Motown that is in their lineup. Disco Duck!!! Give me a break.

I agree that the idea was great but the execution was poor. For the Labor Day holiday week, they should have broke with format and really give us a taste of "The greatest hits of all time from A to Z " Now that would have been exceptable in my book.

I agree with Evil Roy. They should have taken it a step further, and play everything from the fifties to late- 70's/ early 80's. It could have been their version of "The History of Rock n' Roll". They already have "Elvis & Friends" and "Street Corner Sunday", why not include the songs played on those programs? Just a thought.

For the most part, I have enjoyed the songs they have played. I would have included, for example, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot. "Muskrat Love" by The Captain & Tenille should be a "Jukebox From Hell" candidate for Ross Brittain's "Weekend Hit Machine" show.
