Oh Little STAR of Buffalo

As I was driving home from Niagara Falls tonight, I was coming across the border only to learn my radio was over thrown by radio free Kris Kringle. Please stay with me, it is a week before Thanksgiving, I have not put my turkey in the darn oven yet nor have I bought the doomed bird. Can I at least get in my car and be an adult, or pretend to be one. I turned to WJYE, that made me feel better, but I guess there days a numbered too.

Oh long live WHTT. Just don't take any notes from Star. Oh and by the way, at home I now have XM. HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL.

Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

After the Top 9 at 9 got done Star went to commercial and came back at 9:52 with? Any guesses?? Im surprised they didnt jump this morning with the storm!! So any bets on when WJYE begins to Ho itself?

Braindead listeners

As mad as I want to get at the station, obviously they're doing it because it somehow(!) holds the numbers.

I am just embarrassed to be part of the same species that doesn't get BURNED OUT on this stuff long before Christmas actually arrives.

Let's face it: It's NOT good music. It's HOLIDAY music---that's a lot different than "good" music that get's you blood pumping on the way to work or play.

I like Christmas music, but find stations that do this so early UNLISTENABLE. I hope they really pay the price this year thanks to JACK-FM. Then maybe next year they'll dance with the ones that brought them---namely the listener who wants to hear a Hot AC 12 months a year, not just 10 1/2 months a year.

So now we have two AC's going head-to-head, splitting the "Christmas music" listening, leaving stations like Jack, WHTT and WYRK going head to head for 25-54 Persons not interested in hearing Christmas music just yet.

This could be a good thing for Jack, but Infinity has to hope WJYE wins the Battle of the Holiday Hits with Entercom's Star.

WHTT is the wild card that could gain from this, but it would not be a surprise to hear some "Christmas filling" on their playlist very soon.</font>

Oh c'mon. This is your only chance during the year to hear The Hollyridge Strings pluck out Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Percy Faith and even... wait for it, Robert Goulet! Artists that used to be all over the beautiful music station but haven't been heard in at least a decade outside of XM and a handful of standards stations that toss in easy intrumentals into the mix. :)

What gets on my nerve is the fact there are literally thousands of Christmas albums out there - enough to build a playlist that could run the entire holiday season with no repeats, but instead we are sure to get Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree at least once every two hours. Last year, it was playing at the same time on two different stations. AIGH!

The Christmas format is what HD Radio subchannels were made for. They could run it from September until January and everyone would be happy. Oh wait, it's the lousy U.S. IBOC system. The world chooses Eureka and we decide we can do better and then don't.

Not So Stellar

So Star went All-Christmas after 9PM yesterday, and WJYE went All-Christmas this morning at 6:08. Effectively, if your target is the office/retail/wage slave sector, there's no difference in the timing. The folks who want to switch to All-Christmas on the sound-system radio at work this morning won't need to change to Star if they're already on WJYE.

I think Star blew it. If they were going to go, they needed to beat WJYE by at least a day or two. Actually, Star had the perfect opportunity to kick off Christmas with a bang last Saturday. I believe they did a remote welcoming Santa to the Boulevard Mall. It would have been a perfect opportunity to promote the Hell out of their Christmas flip and beat WJYE to the Christmas Punch by at least a couple of days. Since the Boulevard Mall was declaring a beginning to the Christmas Season, Star could have (subtly) made them responsible for the early start.

By effectively starting at the same time as WJYE, they don't gain any significant competitive advantage over them, and they're likely to give up listeners who aren't ready for Christmas 24/7 to Jack and WHTT.

The good news is that Star now has about 5 weeks to figure out how to differentiate themselves from WKSE, WJYE, Jack, and even WHTT.

How do you feel about "Star Country"? Does Roger Christian like Martina McBride?

Re: Not So Stellar

So lets say Star had went Christmas last sat. Do you think WJYE wouldnt have flipped the next day?

As for Country music on 102.5 YUCK. That would be such a waste of a format on 102.5... Like I said before 102.5 should go Rythmic and 98.5 should go Hot AC with a CHR lean.. But oh yeah Roger Christian wouldnt fit in with that, cuase old Roger needs to stay on 102.5 until he is 80...

Just my opinion : )

WHATEVER!!!!

Since it was a weekend, they would probably have had a one or two shopping day lead on WJYE. That may have been enough to get the retail market tuners on 102.5 for the season instead of 96.1.

As far as post-Christmas is concerned, it'll be interesting to see what adjustments - if any - are made to both Kiss and Star.

And nobody would deny your right to post it here. This board serves as a platform for all opinions, from the ridiculous to the sublime.

Not to pre-judge, but when a suggestion is made that station "x" should flip format to this or that, one wonders what rationale is used. Sure, we're entitled to our opinions, but shouldn't our opinions be measured by reason as well as sentiment?

Although the Summer book was not kind to Star 102.5, the station has consistently billed millions of dollars each year as a top-rated Hot AC station. (Knowledgeable sources say Star bills between $5 and $7 million annually.) For the first time in many years, Star faces a direct, retaliatory competitor posed by Infinity's Jack 92.9, which may adversely affect Star's rating and billing stability and succes. Similarly, Kiss bills millions each year as a very successful CHR station. Each station spends (hundreds of) thousands of dollars positioning themselves, building their brands and promoting their brands.

To specule or suggest that succesful stations flip formats or trade formats with the other is pure folly. Kiss and Star face challenges, to be sure, but it's unlikely Entercom would consider throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

As to Roger Christian, over the years, he has been a program director, music director and air personality through many formats on 102.5. He's one of the best personalities in the market: Never flashy, but always smooth, assured and consistent. Like many of Buffalo's seasoned radio personalities, he's had the opportunity to work elsewhere and has chosen to stay in Buffalo. Radio here is better for it.

I'm one poster who thinks Roger is capable of doing a fine job in any format, from AC to Classic Rock, CHR to Country and by stating this, I'm not suggesting Star is going to flip format by suggesting this.

Old News Department, Summer 25-54 Persons Mon-Sun 6a-Mid Top 10: WYRK, WGRF, WHTT, WBLK, WJYE, WBUF, WBEN, WKSE, WTSS, WLKK.

WBEN, WBLK, WBUF, WHTT and WKSE all up, some significantly.

I have no problem with Roger Christian..However, does a 25 to 45 year old woman really relate to Roger?

Yes he is a great person, very likable, and an excellent radio person, but does he really fit the demo they are going for..
Sometimes you have to do whats right for the buisness, you dont keep people around becuase evryone he works with likes him, you keep him around becuse he is whats right for the buisness (demo)...

I dont mind Roger myself but some of the woman that work for me say he is boring and sounds like their father..That really doesnt sound like the thing you want to hear from a 29 and 35 year old woman..These are the people they are going after, right??

It seems to me that they should have someone a little high energy, and probably female doing afternoons.. At least someone that the audience can relate to.

I think Roger would be a great addition to The Lake, and bring a strong presence that they dont have.. A station like that would be a better fit then where he is at now...

My purpose isnt to bash him, its just to say he is kind of a fish out of water..

Much Love to you all The Majic Rock Star...Hmmmm

PS>>>Oh yeah Sir Star will never go Country..Trust me on that.. Element knows what he is saying when it comes to billing...Of course on this board every station stinks and should be changed....
lets see
Star 102.5 All Polka all the time....

Star 102.5 all tropical all the time...

Star 102.5 all screaming Divas all the time...

lol... sorry had to have a little fun..: )

You're so right. WJYE flipped to wall to wall holiday music on Friday afternoon. Everyone who's doing it, did it this week because they wanted to get a boost for one full month of the fall Arbitron book (which went into its last month as of Friday).

Apropos of WHTT, they're doing something interesting this year...offering an alternate all-holiday music stream on their website, for those who want to hear Christmas fare with an oldies touch while they're at the office. I gather that parallel stream will remain an alternative while the main programming channel will stay largely with the usual library of 1964-85 hits. (When they get their IBOC gear installed they'll probably also offer the alternate programming on a second over-the-air stream.)
