Oh, No! Ho-Ho-Ho is Back

Thanks K~EZ...a month and a half of Beth & Bill Approved Xmas Music is now on the air!

Bah Humbug from Buckeye!

Terrible banter, terrible music, blah!

(BTW, just heard the new Cat Stevens stuff on Radio Free Phoenix, way cool!)

There's just something inherently wrong about a 90+ degree November day and K~EZ playing "O Holy Night". Beth & Bill may approve, but the Middle Eastern Men Of The Media don't!

Methinks the good Dr. isn't exactly the listener Beth and Bill or KEZ are going for.

Judging by the abundance of testosterone (however misdirected at times), none of us are the flavor of human "The Holiday Station" is looking for.

Just finished having a turkey sandwich with a slice a pumpkin pie. Did some shopping on Black Friday. About to go and hang out my Christmas lights. I turn on KEZ to get in the holiday mood. Thankfully, they started their Christmas music on 24 November.

What?

You mean they started on FIFTEEN NOVEMBER?!?
What's next? Christmas music while you give out candy to Trick or Treaters? The Fireplace Burning Log Show on 24/7 starting 23 December? ???

Unfortunately, since my girlfriend loves Christmas music, she leaves KEZ on 24/7. It wouldn't be so bad if their playlist wasn't even shorter than KOOL's. They play the same 50 songs over and over and over and over again. I don't mean 50 Christmas songs (there are really only about 100 or so), but the same 50 versions of those songs, with every fifth song by the Carpenters (who's music I thought was used to torture prisoners at Gitmo. ;D ).

Enough already!

KEZ is number #1 every Fall book because of Christmas music. The people who criticize stations for playing holiday music too early have no awareness of the ratings spike it provides year after year.

But how much of an increase in revenue to Clear Channel is there? I don't hear any extra ad time. Are they bumping up their rates accordingly?

And where are the #1? The meaningless 12-plus or the 25-54 mommies-with-kids ratings (which they target anyway)?

The Fall ratings period is one of the most important. Having a good Fall book can only help sales. A couple of years ago I read an article that posted numbers of all-holiday stations, both 12+ and Women 25-54. As good as the 12+ numbers are, the numbers in the target demo are spectacular. Mommies with kids are exactly who this appeals to the most, not teens, not 18-24, and not men. Since it seems that 90%+ of people who participate on radio message boards are male it's no surprise holiday music is so unpopular on R-I boards.

One thing that I have noticed is that when the Fall ratings come out nobody ever mentions the Christmas spike KEZ (and other all-holiday stations across the country) gets. Nobody ever says "I don't like it personally but it sure was smart of KEZ to play Christmas music so early". Part of this is because by the time the Fall ratings are released it's almost Spring and nobody s even thinking of Christmas. Maybe this will change with the PPM and much quicker ratings results.

I agree with the criticism that their playlist is way too short. When MAC owned KEZ, they played a broader playlist with different versions of the same songs and actually got creative with the formula. They still got killer ratings. I actually could listen to that, but not the mess they have now. For example, the second I hear the electric guitar riff for "Jingle Bell Rock" I nearly go postal and have to switch stations. Since KEZ plays this song every nine minutes (OK, it only seems like that), I simply don't listen to them at all anymore. But, since most people don't seem to mind, Clear Channel can foist this bean-counter-friendly-lowest-common-denominator-pre-packaged-boring-pap on Phoenix for another Yuletide. And I move ever closer to purchasing XM.....

True confession -- I have been listening! :-\ For anyone else who fesses up... Have you heard the Holiday memory testimonials of the Channel 10 "personalities?" Are Beth & Bill and Tim & Willy still guests on Channel 3's Good Morning AZ? Or, has the new Channel 10/Clear Channel affiliation put the kabosh on that?
