Oh No! The Sound is blowing more hot air

I was going to buy an HD radio, but the problem is that they are just small portable units and I want an HD radio that I can hook up in my studio. If they make anything studio or home stereo ready, then I will buy it.

There are component tuners from Sangean and Sony, to name two.

I saw that Andy Chanley "letter" yesterday forwarded to me in an e-mail from a friend who is still on The Sound's mailing list. Since I am now persona non grata with them, I'm sure they have long ago removed me from their mailing list. I found it especially funny that they e-mailed Don Barrett as a "listener/fan" i.e. part of the 'mass' e-mailing.

Two statements in the e-mail really stood out:

"The "experts" say radio stations can only be successful these days if they play a handful of hit songs... over and over."

Yet the ongoing complaint had been the repetition of the same classic rock songs or the repetition of the same one or two cuts from acts that are not considered classic rock. I say "had been" since there is no longer a forum available for complaints...prolly why it was 86'd ;D

"a station that takes risks by playing more than just hit singles"

Ah yes the ol' 'taking risks' that The Sound is/was famous for ........
JOHN, Late to the party...working late - Tell me, when did The sound kill off the board?? I tried to check it last week, and alas, no more 'Sound Board'. I guess they were tired of you, me and PT :p Peace - Joe

John knows the backdoor into the Sound board.

Joe my friend, here's the "back-door" link OC Radio Geek mentioned.

Not that there's much activity going on there.

http://www.thesoundla.com/?nid=101&sid=506

On a side note, they have banned my account so I can't post as "SuperRadioFan" anymore. It's a first for me- I have never been banned from any board of any subject not just radio ever on any topic .... They have also banned PT's account ... So much for free speech - [Yes I know it's a private board everyone] :D Maybe they are purging the malcontents so they can open up a new link to a New Forum ?

They probably only want to have positive comments on their board. They can't take criticism! lol

Plug the leak in the barrel and another outlet shows up.

Album Sides Wednesday is my favorite special show on KSWD. I love listening to vinyl! You can't beat the warmth and imaging of vinyl.

I can't wait for the KMET Day! I am going to record the entire day.

SuperRadioFan and I have discussed the problems with KSWD on several occasions. When I first began listening to them, their playlist was excellent! I was hooked!! Over the past several months, KSWD has taken a nose dive.......so sad. Maybe they will adopt the KMET playlist and attitude after July 10th!

I don't know if "nose dive" is an accurate depiction. It should be noted that prior to several months ago their ratings were challenged to get to a 1.0, but the last few ratings are 1.1; 1.4; 1.2. And you know why.... They are an AOR station now, any resemblance to Adult Alternative is just a coincidence.

If by the "KMET playlist" you mean they're going to play the best CURRENT rock? They're going to concentrate on music by active bands that are relevant to the times? What a HUGE change that will be!! I've been hoping for a year that the Sound would become a progressive, innovative station like KMET was!! I mean, they can't possibly expect us to believe that just playing 30 year old songs by bands that haven't been together (or alive) in decades with a DJ that sounds like Jeff Gonzer's grandfather would be a reincarnation of the Mighty Met, COULD THEY ???

I wouldn't hold my breath, my friend ::)

The station that was doing just this (playing new music, being cutting edge in a modern, new way) was......Indie. In fact, they took it quite a bit further.

I think The Sound is trying to invoke the spirit of KMET the same way KLSX did right after KMET bit the dust. "Let's relive the great music OF THE PAST," is basically what KLSX said, even hiring the old KMET jocks. Thus, The Sound wouldn't dream of trying to be a "current" music station, or even a AAA station.

What they ARE trying to do is what XM's Deep Tracks does: play more variety of classic rock. I think that strategy could work, IF they are willing to commit. But, clearly, they are deathly afraid of playing deeper tracks, of letting the jocks pick tracks, and of letting things be more organic and creative. The result is a station that is not as excruciatingly boring as KLOS, but is still not really compelling enough to attract the "true music fans." There are still WAY too many spins for things like Journey, Oye Como Va, and Fly Like an Eagle. Zzzzzzzz........

Actually, I am quite impressed with the above playlist. That is a good variety of music, but it's not all classic rock. I am surprised to see The Fixx on there! I can definitely do without "London Calling" and "American Woman". Pfft! There are far better tracks by The Clash and Lenny Kravitz to play.

Super,

Is your asterisk key not working well? There are a few on this list that don't have one...

LOL I only asterisked the more prominent Usual Suspects!! Haha BTW that GREAT movie was on last night on KDOC-TV!!

News Flash--- The Sound has disabled their forum totally so no one can post a compliment or a critique.

As OC Radio Geek mentioned, the variety on The Sound is better than KLOS' variety WOW ;) Try and find ANY one-hit wonders on the playlist... All the artists are familiar so that should really skyrocket their ratings ... Oh yeh it did from 1.2 to 1.3

Andy's message makes him look like the Don Quixote of LA Radio - crazy man tilting at windmills.

And to prove it, when I tuned in for a few minutes yesterday, he was going on about the joys and wonders of the clicks and pops derived from playing the album sides off of vinyl.

Hey Andy, if the vinyl fidelity is so great, why don't you go with it full time? That pure, clean, digital sound one gets from CDs and MP3s is so joyless to everyone, they really do want their music to sound like Rice Krispies in the morning. Jeez.
Hilarious! 8)

This is basically the same mix of old KLOS and KROQ tracks that JACK is doing. The only exception might be the Genesis track, which KLOS used to play in happier times.

Not adventurous enough. You can't tell us it's "all about the music" and then play the same tired crap.

The "Finally Friday" promotion is over and history. Whew, what a monumental trip through truncated time. The most creative was the "free the KMET 4" bit. Seriously, where was ANY mention of the "Obscene" Steven Clean, Mary "Tacos" Turner, Richard Kimball, Shadoe Stevens, B Mitchell Reed and Mikel Hunter???

You know, the original bunch who built the station for the later bunch to ride into the ratings history books. Mikel programmed the station to its first ratings achievements in the early-mid 70's and undeniably deserves recognition as do all of the aforementioned on the "KMET Friday" promotion staged by KSWD.

Seems to me that Mr. Jeff Gonzer was the leader of this event and he so conveniently wiped away a giant chunk of the Mighty Met's history. Now why would he do that?

Dude, why make the same post in 2 threads??? What's the deal?

:D Yes, SRF, that is so true. KLON, KNAC, KFMF, KOME, KZAM, KJZZ, KZOK, KBRD, KEZX, KQIN, KTIM, KOTR, KMYX, KVEC, KWBR, KBAI are the AM and FMs which have employed yours truly. Mostly FM AOR with a hint of AC and a bit of jazz and beautiful music. If music did not exist, don't know what I would have done for all those years!

WOW K-Otter?? Legendary... When were you there?

Was there when Mike Shaw did afternoon drive and the Otter had its best measurement "book" ever. I left, they were bought by Mapleton, then as KPYG, set to simulcast K-PIG.
