Oh the juxtaposition on HJY

Not a rant but an observation. HJY is still playing What It's Like by Everlast. Why they still play it is beyond me since I don't even think it fits their image, but maybe research has shown some hip hop rock works in their favor. I can see Kid Rock but IMHO Everlast belongs on BRU's retro lunch hour & nowhere else in the market.

They play the edited version as most stations did. Other than the S & F words, the edits are mainly drug references along with "balls", "whore", & the Lord's name in vain. Ironically, other than the 2 4-letter words, I don't think anyone on HJY would shy away from using any of the edited words on the air. If they don't offend the audience when spoken, they don't offend the audience when sung.

I know we've discussed edits before & I understand some of this is beyond the station's control when it comes to edicts from Corporate, but on to the juxtaposition: the song was played back-to-back with Clapton's Cocaine.

HJY is a musically lazy station that knows it has the Providence mainstream rock audience held captive. They have no competition and I would call them passive rock in that the music goes in one ear and out the other. The only thing they have to worry about is where B101 draws the line when it comes to the classic rock titles they both play.To HJY's credit they have never abandoned the personality approach but even though their numbers have slid they still have a lock on the mainstream rock audience. They're also at the mercy of new releases and for every month there's a new Tool and Godsmack there are three months of garbage releases.Sooner or later there will have to be changes but they are the kind of station that changes nothing until they're forced. They need a BCN-AAF type competition but that won't happen here.
