Oh, WOW...how long can you listen?

The 102.1 translator moved to 101.9 at 250 watts off the KZON tower.
Was licensed to Casa Grande as K271CR. Moved to 101.9 as K270CV licensed to Santan as translator for KNAI.
Also the Buckeye translator moved from 102.1 to 101.9
The construction permit for KAHM was changed from non-directional to directional sending less power towards Phoenix Metro back in August of 2017

Blame REC for being a little off on the display.

I really enjoy Spectrum cable's channel 930, "The 70's". Granted, this is not over-the-air radio, but it is almost like they don't care what tests well and what doesn't. They just lay it out there, and that brings up great 70's classics that were hits that nobody on terrestrial radio will play. It is far better than "canned" classic hits station that think "Old Time Rock & Roll", "Like A Virgin", and "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" need to be in heavy rotation. I am all for a much bigger variety of hits on so-called "oldies" stations, while at the same time understand how "safe" titles equal ratings on terrestrial radio. Too bad.

I’m glad you posted that info. I was a little confused when this morning I checked and received only KAHM on 102.1 on the entire west side of the Valley, all the way past the tunnel to a bit past the Salt River. Then a country(?) station overpowered it.

Can’t receive anything at all at home on 102.1, but the car pulls it in fine.

Back to the WOW Factor, the Android app seems to work well. The song log is up-to-the-minute and the fidelity seems ok (but then I have really old ears).

Earlier today at 6:46pm MST I heard Rich Girl into Kashmir (all 8+ minutes) into Duke of Earl. I had to say wow, that's the first time I've heard those three played next to each other.

While Nurse Jeff and I've long to walk thru a Dukedom, that indeed is major WOW Factor crash of epic proportions. But hey, if you dig Led Zeppelin, you're probably into Gene Chandler as well! Or something like that......

like i have said before .. maybe even on this thread.. i dont know... Wow is just another name for a locally programmed Jack FM/Variety hits station and its getting drooled over because of whos programming it.

I work for a commercial station thats been doing locally program0emd VAriety hits for 9 years.. and the same type of people who drool over Wow FM.. have told me our station is a mess, too much different music, etc.

WE play music from the 70s to now... centered on 80s to now... nothing too hard nothing too soft, nothing too slow.. nothing to rock-y based.....we sprinkle in some 70s and play everything from AC to pop to country to AC gold to a tiny bit of 90s alternative typeish stuff

Overall, we go for the sound of an upbeat mainstream ac and it works out better then youd think

However as I recall you're not in a Top 25 market. Which is the case here.

'Tis true..we've been doing it for longer and better, in my opinion. If youd care to listen, private message me and i'll give you the link. I dont want to be accused of spam or promotion

But it makes a difference because you can do things in smaller markets that you can't do in majors. That's the point. A recording artist can have more control over their music if they release it on an indie. But they may not get the level of push they'd receive at a major. Is their music better or worse because it's on an indie? That's not the point. The circumstances are different, the deal is different, the competition is different, the potential rewards are different, and on and on. Sebastian could have put his format in a small market. It probably would have had far less scrutiny. But he wanted it to compete in a major. That can be a blessing or a curse. He put it on a 1 share station, and after a year, the station is still getting about the same numbers. It might have been a bigger hit if he had launched it some place were there was less competition and less scrutiny. We'll never know.

<...>Either there's a real train wreck between songs, or they play something down right stupid that doesn't belong on the station. So while we're all confined to our Huts due to either coronavirus or the scorching heat, what's the longest you've been able to listen to 95~one or 94~nine without bailing out?
Actually remembering this discussion, on the way back from a quick jaunt over the river and thru the deserts, I took the opportunity to listen for probably the length of the 'Brenda Cutoff' along I-10.

Since SWMBO was also in the car, I solicited her input.

Would I stream it on a regular basis? Probably not.

She, OTOH, enjoyed most of what was being played.

I actually heard this station playing in a business today. I was shocked. It was in a local establishment in the general area of Bell Rd. & the 303.

"If you don't like the (eight minute long) song that's playing, you're bound to like the next one! It's called 'VARIETY'"

...or not like the next eight minute song! As we teach our students at the Media Hut, you're never hurt by what you don't play.

Yet I still hear songs on KOAI that we used to play when I was at KOY 25 years ago... where our audience was unashamedly 55+. I don't expect too many of those folks to still be alive, so I don't expect the older end of the old KOY library to still work.

KOY (AM) had some excellent personalities (ex: Bill Heywood) which made listening GREAT between songs. It didn't matter much what the music was because the DJ's were interesting to listen to. I was 50 25 years ago and working in an IT development job. The whole department listened to KOY every working day. Had those same on-air guys still been working I would still have been listening.

Yes, but 25 years ago was 1996, when I was running the automation at KOY for their satellite delivered Adult Standards format. The morning host was a guy out of LA named Jeff Rollins.

Bill Heywood and the rest of the KOY personalities had been gone for at least 10 years by then. Let's recall the spectacular failure that was simply putting a "full service" AM station on FM up against Light Rock and Less Talk at K-Lite 99 FM. You can't say they didn't try...

My math sucks. The time period I meant to use was the late 70's. I was in my mid 30's then as was most of my KOY-friendly peers.

As the Wow Factor has transitioned away from their original premise (play dissimilar types of music with frequent train wrecks), its ratings have greatly improved: 1.5-3.3 in four monthlies. KOAI is now the top rated Riviera station in the Valley, beating out Hot 97~Five KMVA and Power 98~Three KKFR. No doubt the Wow Factor has pulled audience from Oldies 92~Seven/Lumberyard 14~Forty, but they're getting listeners from elsewhere. KAZG has remained flat the past four months with a 1.0 share.
