Ohio CC talkers complete move to Fox

While I understand the reasoning to brand the stations with a more respected conservative cast and reduce inventory clutter, there's also the issue of production. Have to say, I'm not a fan.

WTAM, who IMHO had among the best IDs among all N/Ters (next to KFI and WLW, which I believe is keeping ABC), has ruined theirs with their new Fox sounder. So has TVN. I'm guessing SPD, KBN, and the like have followed suit? I realize this is a somewhat petty complaint, but to take the imaging used by these heritage stations for years and flush it all away seems silly. The ABC-I sounder means news in my opinion, and I've always felt that way.

Call me crazy, or just an industry geek, but to me an ID and overall production represents a station and its position. Not that I'm in much company, but I'll try to DX KFI at least once a week at night just to hear the 45-second long story they run as an ID. It's entertaining and unpredictable, something these new CC Ohio production elements really aren't.

I haven't heard enough of the new Fox-based WTAM sounder to be fair, but I sure miss the "boom-boom-BOOM!". It's about as close as a pre-produced element can come to giving a radio guy goosebumps, and it screamed "we're the big honkin' news machine here, pay attention!".

Oh, well. Change and all that.

For the longest time, WTAM used a composite of ABC sounders on their TOH ID - including a portion of the classic early 80's era ABC-I sounder when Jim Cutler said "Now, Continuing Coverage on NewsRadio..." - then blasted into the "boom-boom-BOOM-BOOM" with "WTAM 1100 - Cleveland!"

That was a wonderful template - used since early 2000. WLW even borrowed the WTAM TOH ID for a bit in early '99, too.

The ABC-esque sounder WTAM and all other CC/Ohio talkers - WWVA/1170-Wheeling is the exception - is used a different ABC-I sounder that had a certain flair to it.

I don't like Brian James doing the IDs. I love him on hot AC or CHR, but news and talk stations need that deep authoritative sound. *sigh*

I agree, but I never even knew Brian James VOed KFI. I would agree that his stuff for KPRC and others is a little AC-ish, but KFI sounds alright to me. Who's that girl that whispers "(boom boom boom) Los Angeles (boom) Orange County"?

And what's with WLW switching to Fox... isn't that KRC's job?

I actually thought WLW would keep ABC and use some Fox cuts, why do I get the feeling that Darryl Parks was overruled on this one?<P ID="signature">______________
