Well, us inland bound ex-Gulf Coaster types need honest and real updates. How bad is the oil on the coasts down your way? We ain't getting the real truth from any national media. CW, rob or anyone else, what are you seeing? How bad is this going to hurt tourism? I'm hearing lots of folks making new plans instead of going to the usual Gulf Coast hot spots. I won't start the rant that will get me put off of this board, but man, my hearts with you all on the ALWAYS AND FOREVER World's Most Beautiful White Sand Beaches. You're going to have to take control of this. No one else that's not lived there all these years obviously has a damn clue.

BTW, Nock, you did a stellar job as a tourist posting on Facebook about the coast last week. Brought tears to my eyes many times. My hearts with you. If I was on the air down there, I'd be in jail by now.
 
just saw Sam Champion on ABC's GMA reporting from PCB: standing ankle-deep...
he could pull up tar balls out of the water on-command.
hope Tony Hayward enjoyed his weekend in the UK...yachting in clean water.

I live in Tallahassee. Growing up I used to spend several weeks every summer at Mexico Beach, between PC and Port St. Joe.

We went to PC this weekend. Saturday afternoon we did swim. Didn't see any tar balls but there was a seaweed that looked like green balls. When it dried it looked like a thin paper..put it back in the water it turned back into green balls. We didn't stay long.

On Sunday went to St. Andrew State Park. A lot of folks there..lots of folks talking about whether the beach would be safe to swim in by the end of July. Someone there at St. Andrew apparently took a boat out about a mile and got oil in their gear. The water there was more clear.

Nothing like visiting and just keeping your mouth closed and ears open to find out what people are thinking. It's just a matter of "when" rather than "if" it gets there, apparently.

At least that's what it sounded like.
 
Well, CR, I am certainly with you on that. Mr. Evil is the epitome of why sadly, it's true, most corporations are cuss words geared solely toward their own greedy self interests. I never thought we'd see such blatant disregard for a sense of right or compassion. AND, I am equally saddened that the governmental "leadership" is actually more clueless than I would have expected. It should have been "at any cost, we welcome of friends and neighbors from other nations with technologies to get to the Gulf and ALL do our best to never allow a drop of oil to get anywhere close to hitting our shores. But, instead, we have a bunch of self-centered blow hards in suits that like to show their girlfriends just how tough they are yelling at clueless CEO's on CSPAN as their way of SOLVING things. I will say this and yeah, I am pissed to all hell about it, type in Destin Oil Spill on Flickr.com and see the most beautiful pictures of American coastlines as of the last few days and think about what happens next. We cannot even now protect ourselves from a disaster we know is slowly coming. Nothing is sacred. Sorry. I spent quite a lot of my time along those beaches, and to me the people there and the place itself is where many of my most enjoyable experiences and good times have happened. Mod., I guess this will go to TIO, cause I know it's not radio related (totally), but it's bigger than that. The $20B (all of which will never get paid by BP you mark my words) won't cover the long term damage to PC and Destin alone, much left the rest of the area. I don't wanna hear a British accent much right now. Give me those "rednecks in the redneck Riviera" any day. Let them take control and fix this. It's more than JUST radio. It's America that we're fighting for. And a few million innocent fine folks living there and the horrifically sad dying wildlife. Makes me wanna cry.

Alan, just read your update. Thank you. We all care about you guys more than you will ever know. Sorry, didn't intend to get off to such an angered filled Monday, sir.

There were definitely signs all around PCB that things aren't right.

In the Tallahassee Democrat http://www.tallahassee.com today (6/21)there's a story by the Associated Press that's titled something like "More tar balls, oil found." Unfortunately, that article
is pretty accurate.
 
Tibbs...it is too early to tell exactly how much impact we will have here. We have tar balls on the beach. The winds and currents are supposed to be pushing it back west this week. Any way you cut it, we are screwed for the summer. I hope that SOB enjoyed his yachting in GB....BP has no concept of PR....I would hate to own their stock right now. I have a BP card and I haven't used it in almost 2 months.....and don't come back to me and say I am hurting the service station owners who have no control....they can get another brand of gas to sell.

This is gonna be bad, friends. Far worse than any of our elected "representatives" are admitting publicly. I won't get on the political soapbox 'cause there are plenty of other places to do that. But I will say this catastrophe will almost certainly change the Gulf Coast and it's way of life FOREVER!

CCENG, hell ... you know me. You can't piss me off. This time there's not enough Hendrick's Gin in Nashville to calm my nerve from this. Ever look at Flickr.com? Check the pictures of YOUR beautiful coast. It's heaven and you know it. Those BP fools have never seen it, I am sure. If I was the CEO, I would be a (bigger than usual) basket case, praying, begging, whatever to call in every possible favor, resource, solution and human to help.

I totally get what you are saying about BP and boycotting them a SMALL, get it SMALL piece of what they should have coming to them. I'd cut that damn card up. They will end up bankrupting
and never paying much of that $20 Billion, which won't be 10% of the economic losses coming your way.

I officially am over British accents (which I usually love) and I am sorry, but that CLOWN is the worst example of a human I have seen. How dare them act this way. And us American's are egotisical, etc. Right. They can....

I am finishing up my project here (sorry havent seen the light of day since I couldn't hear you on my cellphone last time we talked) and then it's time (and you know what I mean) to at least ask 0 0. :) You can't take the out of the Gulf Coast, but man....

Please, good friends on the Gulf, thanks for the updates and don't feel like you're overdoing them.

Someone, may you or CCENG, in radio needs to send an SOS signal and get the media to park there and demand action TODAY. Flip formats. Call your radio station "The Yacht." Get the 94.5 on this Charlie. I dunno. Make serious waves and demand these clowns in stop going to concerts, playing golf and burying their heads.

When we had the floods up here a few months ago, we pulled ourselves out of most of it. Billion plus dollars. WE ARE NASHVILLE. You ARE THE GULF COAST. Git her done.

Charlie, if I had that stick I talk to you about, I would be banned by the FCC by now. ;D But it would have a 25 share while it lasted.

You gentleman make America proud. I need a dip, Charlie. REAL AMERICANS!
 
Things have to be much worse than anyone is saying. The wildlife and fish kills probably haven't even come close to peeking. The toxins released into the air through evaporation and wave action will be (could already be) quick killers of people with respiratory problems and make everyone in the entire region sick. It's bad, very bad and will almost certainly get worse. This is so massive and still unrelenting. If it travels the gulf stream around the entire peninsula of Florida, up the east coast into Newfoundland the resulting dead zones could trigger mass starvation.

I'll be honest in my comparison---when my grandmother was deteriorating just before her death, i couldn't bring myself to visit her often...just like I am somewhat avoiding the beaches even though I live 10 minutes from the Destin Beaches and stay at a condo on the water here and there...since the oil, i don't want to go to the condo. I do think that while this is disaster, it kills me when news reporters dramatize things by showing a zoomed in close-up shot of a tarball, with a kid's sand pail and shovel next to it...we definitely don't have it as bad as the guys to my west in Louisiana..just sad..i've rescued animals before, but i can't even bear to watch oil ridden birds..just sad

Thanks! Always wanted to own a station, ever since I was 4 years old. Never had the money to do it, though. But I do have a soft spot for the Gulf. I lived right on the water in Ocean Springs, MS in those final blissful days before Katrina, so I know what a treasure it is. So sad to watch this happen.
 
Rant!!! Okay this is the deal. I am one mile from the beach in Gulf Shores Alabama. People are swimming, and the beaches are okay as of the post. Our biggest enemy right now...the media.

You hit it right on the money. The national media is killing us just as much as this oil disaster is. That's why I stick to local news for information. I really don't care what the political ramifications are. ::)
 
Ok, guys (and gals) - lemme git a clarification for this bonehead living "up Norf" (me) surrounded by nuthin but land (great place, though...America's Music City) - are you saying the media is turning into a political issue or are you saying the media is scaring tourists away, etc and costing the area a fortune? The media is guaranteed to get no details correct, no matter what. The govt. and corporations is a rant for another day, right? Have you seen a decrease in traffic, etc? If so, it's going to be horrible on small businesses. Just asking for a clarification (and of course updates on how the various beaches are faring)...cause honestly, what I do see on TV is pretty much as murky as oil to get the real truth on how you all are suffering (or not, etc.)

CW, can you lock us in on a better transmitter for the last avail freq on the right? I am homesick. Let's crank it.
 
I can smell the oil sometimes. It's roughly 100 miles or so from my house. Tarballs have hit navarre beach but I think Destin is clean.

Highway 98 was dead there, too. Very spooky as we lost a lot of tourism and dollars here. I'm looking to relocate due to the fact this area has nothing for me. I don't know if I can even sell my house.

They are doing very poorly on the cleanup and I suspect this was planned. BP really did make this area a ghost town..or at least it's on its way to becoming one.

So much for Harbor Docks and other local places thriving here.
 
Let's hope our "friends" at BP have finally capped the leak and it holds! How are things on the coast? Thinking about you all everyday.
 
Gulf Shores update: Beaches have been great. We had the Jimmy Buffett concert. No Oil on the beach, no smell. 35,000 people had a great time. Catch the telecast on CMT. I believe the replay will be on Saturday (7/17). Hopefully this nightmare will end soon now that this thing is capped.
 
Rob---you apparently don't travel to destin often..either that or you don't wait in the line at the Donut Hole...there are snowbirds still coming down here
