Hypothetical scenario that would never happen but let's say every on air personality in the market were to go on strike & hit the picket line. As a listener are there any stations you would actually go out of your way to support in terms of joining the picket line to get them back on? Are there any you would at least publicly voice support of even if you didn't join in actively? As either an insider or listener, which station/stations do you think would get the most listener support?

I think HJY would stand a good chance of getting listener support. I don't think it would be out of any empathy for the staff, but more from a purely selfish standpoint of missing the station.

Maybe with school out, soccer moms would have time to do a little picketing with Joan Edwardsen.

Gary DeGraide might get a few to show up.

Forget about the talk hosts. I really think even their biggest fans & followers love to hate them.

And don't say everybody can go to hell because you wouldn't be on a radio board if you really felt that way.

LOL..... Not any station in Providence. I would just tune in stations in other markets. We are lucky enough to be located in a part of the country where we can do that. Providence does not offer anything so spectacular that I'm going to take time out of my day to stand on a corner with a sign. Every Providence radio station could blow up tomorrow and my day would continue on as if nothing ever happened. The only Personality that I would feel bummed out over losing would be Howard Stern. But since Citadel yanked him off the air in Rhode Island, I have no appreciation for them now either. WPRO is the best station is town, but for the reason just stated I'm sure the hell not going to go out of my way for them. There are plenty of other options out there. I would pick one and be fine with it.

So then everybody can go to hell? I don't expect listeners to walk the line but I'm surprised you haven't formed any attachment to any music station even if you can hear the same format in Boston or Connecticut.

I simply don't like Providence radio anymore. Back in time I *DID* have attachements. David Simpson on 92 PRO-FM was awsome. Everybody on HJY brought something to the table. WRX was a fun Classic Rock station. Kix 106 was also a great station back in the day. WBRU was cutting edge and WSNE wasn't sickenly sweet with that Delilah Crap. Simply put... I don't think Rhode Island radio has ever been worse than it is now! Even WHJJ has gone down the tubes and has reached a level dangerously close to what WALE was. I'll still scan the dial in my car and stop on a good song. However these days I absolutely do not have any Attachements to Rhode Island radio. It's as if everyone Good went on vacation and I'm still waiting for them all to come back. Rhode Island radio pretty much Blows!

I think that the Clear Channel stations would just end up voicetracking people from out of the market, pretending like nothing is going on. In this day and age, with computer automation running the show, the average listener may not even know that a strike would be going on. If stations were still using CDs, then there would be more of a problem.

I'd be sad about HJY and Cat Country. They're basically the last 2 good stations left, even though HJY is basically playing a cookie-cutter playlist. Primarily, it's the air talent that I would miss at these 2 stations.

Yes my scenario was really not realistic but more to get an idea of listener loyalty with both music & talent. You may be right about WCTK too especially if you consider country not available anywhere else except for the folks who can pick up WKLB or Connecticut country stations. I think you & Rig are the main two country listeners on here. I was looking at the total programming package rather than just the music.

And consider a WCBS rally in NYC drew only 150 people protesting the format change so equate that with what would happen in Providence.

It's too hot to picket anyway but I'd leave a nasty voice mail at WCTK, Cool 102, & WMVY. Everyone else is a preset because I have 18 presets.

Back in the late 70's the air staff at WBCN in Boston went on strike. It was amazing how their listenership publicly rallied around them, and how many advertisers pulled their ads while the scabs filled in the air shifts.
