CONGRATULATIONS - You have just been promoted to Program Director of a new NEWS/TALK station in L.A. The owner is giving you Carte Blanche to program the station the way you want with the hosts/shows you want.

(3 stipulations 1. NO SYNDICATION....every thing MUST be local
2. You are only allowed to give 2 hours on Sat. & Sun. for Informercials
3. You CANNOT sched. a "Best Of" show at any time

Begin with Sunday @ 12am and end with end with Saturday Midnight!

I was having a conversations with some fellow LARP's last weekend and we made our own sched. to compare for fun so I thought I would see if anybody else has thoughts on this.

I look forward to seeing the results.

Midnight sunday lets kick off with alocal talk show from sunday mightnight sunday thru friday with mr kabc lets see then at 5 am we have john ziegler from 5am till 9 am weekdays then 9-12 we have alred and taylor lib vs conservative or the like whom ever is available then from noon till 3 michael jackson then 3 till 7 larry elder then from 7 till 10 april the co host who use to be with mr kabc and 10 -midnt leo terrel

sat day have a health talk show and then a money show then something different i would do run acontests and ppick someone out of the la rear for there own show but they have to be decent so there you go.

Interesting idea. I'll start with Weekdays:

Midnight - 5:00 am: Mr. KFI/KABC
5:00 am - 9:00 am: Bill Handel, with Dave Williams (news) and Todd Donoho (sports)
9:00 am - 1:00 pm: Larry Elder, with Linda Nunez (news)
1:00 pm - 3:00 pm: Wall Street wrap-up with Frank Mottek and Tom Haule (general news)
3:00 pm - 7:00 pm: John & Ken, with Terri Rae Ulmer (news)
7:00 pm - 10:00 pm: Stephanie Miller, with Vicki Cox (news)
10:00 pm - Midnight: Sports wrap-up with Matt "Money" Smith

Note that every show from 5:00 am to 10:00 pm would have someone do the news at the top and bottom of the hour and "when it breaks".

I doubt I could fill out an entire weekend schedule hour-by-hour but, in general, I would give Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton a 3- or 4-hour show on Sat and Sun. I would also have specialty talk shows about personal finances, cars, computers, home improvement, travel, cooking, and a late-night Loveline-type show with Dr. Drew.

Interesting but one question and a change?

Why not leave Bill Handel with Rich Marotta for sports? And my comment or suggestion would be to substitute Larry Elder with Doug McIntyre or Peter Tilden who are more talented and listenable than Elder.

Your weekend ideas are good, but I’d have Dr. Drew do a more general interest type show like the one tried on KGIL which was cancelled. Also I’d have a weekend political wrap up show with John Zeigler and a liberal leaning female host such as Bree Walker, which they had tried on KGIL. I would also like a local computer show but Leo Laporte is syndicated and Jeff Levy is a little boring so I have no suggestion for a host.

OK, is the point of this station to hear your favorite hosts all together in an "ideal" setting or is it to make money?

If it's the former, play on. If it is the latter, you guys are going to be at a new station in 3 months or less!

Few people at all, and hardly anyone in the 18-49 demo, wants to hear a mishmash of topics (talk, news, sports) or conservative and liberal viewpoints at various points in the day. They want to know what they are going to hear each time they tune in the station. The days of "appointment radio" are long past. The success of KFI is that the whole station is built on a predominantly conservative viewpoint, and there are no sports, or other off-message crap to get in the way. Even Dr. Laura, who of course is more about relationships than politics, still presents her viewpoints along conservative lines. Thus her show fits in better at KFI than it would in other places. So when you punch up the station you will almost always get a conservative voice. When KFI did have more liberal voices (like Karel) they were always the weakest points of the station. Why do you think they are no longer around?

Essentinally what you guys are talking about would be more or less the equivalent of taking the current KGIL (whatta mess!) and putting it on a full signal. I realize KGIL has syndication, and the rules said all local, the spirit of the point remains.

Speaking of KGIL, the best stop on their format wheel was all-Beatles. I actually tuned in every now and then to get my fix. The way things are going over there, that format may be back soon!

Excellent excellent points, Flipper!!

The all-Beatles format really underscores your point- When you tuned in, you absolutely knew what you were going to get!!

In the past even on "full-service" stations like KMPC 710 AM, you pretty much knew what you were going to hear...If it was baseball season, you expected to hear Angels' games at game times. Otherwise the format and real air talent populated the hours there!

On a side note, that is one of the major disppointments of The Sound (and New York's WRXP); When you tune in, you don't know what you're getting, there's no identity, just a mish mash of musical styles in too heavily equal amounts instead of a lot of AAA-type music peppered with other musical genres but only sparingly.

Matbe some of the earlier posters can send their ideas to KABC :)

I am well within that demographic and i must be the exception i want to here a station with hosts of both sides. I find when a station is all one side it is boring even kfi has shows that don't always spout the republican view like john and ken or wayne resnick.I loved it back in 2000 or so when kabc had alred and taylor. One a liberal and one a conservative.

I do not care what research says i do not want a station with all one point of view.If done well it can work i guarantee you that!!!Sal does not know what he is doing with kgil no ifs ands or buts hell he should have just left it alone playing the standards.

Hey Flipper and SuperRadioFan! Instead of using this post to bitch and whine like a little girl about what you don't like in radio, why don't you just answer the question posted like everyone else OR hey....here's an idea.....DON"T REPLY and take your rant to another post!
