Ok, I guess I'll be the first to talk about it.

Ok, I could retype everything I've already said, or simply just quote it from where I originally posted it, add a few things in, and use the time I would've spent retyping the entire thing to go eat some Honey Nut Cherrios instead.

Apparently, I chose to do the latter of the two choices. Enjoy ;) Oh, and reply and correct anything I may have said that was incorrect as well. Thanks.

ALRIGHT, SO....

I guess we have a new alternative station in Phoenix, and it's all pretty confusing to me since I'm sort of new to this all over again.

Anyway, first of all, I've been enjoying the station. However, I've been noticing that there are certain times when they really play more songs that I love for an extended period of time than others. Do they daypart certain things? Another thing is that they have a lot of talk shows, news segments, and even a BBC news segment, and I mean for an entire hour time slot or longer, not just top of the hour. They also have a few talk show segments. I also enjoyed their alternative dance mixshow last night.

I am loving this entire schedule set up, but is this normal for an alternative station (that isn't primarily a talk station)? And I guess there must be different types of alternative because as I said earlier, certain times of the day seem to focus more on particular alternate sounds I like than others.

I think I found this station at the right time because I sort of needed a break from some of the other things on the dial. With the way this station sounds, I'm thinking they should probably consider a dubstep and an alternative electronica show featuring both downtempo and uptempo alternative material. I believe they already feature songs from around the world and a lot of indie local talent. One problem is that only 1 to 4% of the songs they play actually show up on music tracking sites, so I don't know exactly who or what is being played most of the time. I believe one of the reasons it sounds so great is because they are INDEPENDENTLY owned.

By the way, KWSS-LP; ....What in the world does LP stand for?

I have no proof, but "LP" used to mean "long playing records."

For example..."Hey, man...what's up? Did you check out that new Journey LP?"

By the way, when the big owners are deciding which formats to place in which markets, do they take independently owned radio stations into consideration and count them as filling in a format hole, or would a major radio company owner simply "ignore" an independent station with a certain format and move in to bring in their corporate version of it?

For example: Lets say you're in a market that is lacking one of the traditional formats, but there is a local independently owned station that fills that void. Would something like ClearChannel, CBS, Cumulus, Citadel..etc. acknowledge the independently owned station and consider the void filled, or would they act as if the independently owned station is not there and feel the need to fill in the format? And how about college / school stations? Are they ever considered as format hole fillers or just extras?

Are you serious? hahaha, LP stands for Low Power.

Oh, and I'm glad you enjoyed "The Factory" last night. It's the same show I use to do on Energy Sundays Nites.

Also, I'm afraid you're not 1st to bring up the station:

Surprised ya missed it, as you were in the conversation.

Ok... well, I guess I did make a guest appearance to the entire conversation. But still, somehow, I didn't really catch it. Apparently, the current format has been on air at 106.7 more than once. For some reason, it reminds me of a BBC style programmed station. Imagine if we had an independently owned rhythmic format with that style featuring exclusive local and international music and talk at certain times, similar to BBC Radio 1Xtra. That would be great!

"Well kept secret?" What happened to the saying "there are no secrets in radio?" Especially more so if the format is broadcasting. Besides, I thought they'd want people to 'know' that the station was on air. I do think it sounds better and more organized than 103.9, but unfortunately, the station is on a part of the dial where many people are unlikely to go searching for or accidentally stumbling upon a new format. When 103.9 flips, I wonder how many people, other than 107.1 or 107.9 listeners, will turn their dials all the way to the 106's in hopes of finding something new? Even 101.5 struggled a while, and they are straight up in the middle of a bunch of heritage frequencies.

From what I understand, the station has been on air for around 6 months or longer. Kind of a well kept secret, and the people involved have an Alternative background unlike the folks at 103.9. OK Maybe the jocks do, but its not convincing when its the same tired Rock songs all day long.

KWSS has been around longer than that and according to Wiki, it's first air date was in January of 2005. I remember first listening to it quite a while back, but at the time, they were playing even pop hits.

I kinda thought so, as I do recall hearing certain things about it from people in the industry. KDM, I don't mean they want to be a secret, it just turns out that way as its hard to pick up and out of the norm. Kinda like KVIT.

KWSS has been around for about 7 years. And with time KWSS has grown and grownup as well. Many diverse programs on KWSS while the core programming is more "Alternative" leaning. As I said in a previous post I have helped develop the 80's, 90's and 2000 music folders. As well as building a decent independent artist library. We moved our transmitter to a better area so to many it may seem we have not been around long, especially on the west side. And yes the KWSS dial position is not prime. That is something that is hoped to be fixed this year. LP does stand for Low Power LOL.. KWSS is the underdog station in the Valley, and honestly it is fun being the underdog in many aspects. We get to find ways to do what the big guys do with no budget, and still get it done. Anyone that wants money savings tips should consult with an LPFM operator :) And thanks to KWSS I have faced my fear of heights when I helped hang the 2 bay antenna on the tower. Would I ever want to do that again? NO!!! But I faced my fear LOL..

LP = Low Power; Got it. ;)

On another note, it's nice hearing all this house going on tonight on multiple frequencies. 2012 is going to be a great year for Az. radio in regard to electronica, I think. Glad I stayed here.

LP Everybody! (LP = Lets Party)

Thank you so much for your contribution...love KWSS.

Who would've thought that KWSS would become my most listened to station? It was only less than two weeks ago that I wasn't even aware of it. Alternative isn't even my main music preference, yet somehow, I must put it on KWSS over nights, wake up to it, and tune in periodically during the evening and weekends. SOMETHING about this station is great.

The station is even helping to change the landscape of the playlists within my mp3 player as I learn new songs that I love and add them in.

This is the first time I've listened to a non-chr station on a Friday night and felt no urge to flip around to see what else is going on! Wow.... I can't even work on my own productions and stuff because I'm trying to listen to 106.7 at the same time! Might as well just put everything aside, lay low, relax, and enjoy the music and show(s). I'm glad I did not go to LA today after all.

I noticed that KWSS has dropped the "Arizona's Alternative" and replaced it with "Arizona's Modern Rock". I'm wondering what this means.... what's the difference? I feel like it has something to do with the recent 103.9 changes and the fact that new listeners are now discovering 106.7 fm. I hope they don't change too much in response to what any other stations are doing. There are certain reasons why KWSS currently sounds better presentation and content-wise than many of the others!

Well I haven't heard the Modern Rock one for a while now. I do believe I'm still hearing the Alternative one though.

KWSS did say "Modern Rock" years ago. That was phased out to Arizona's Alternative in regards to programming not music. Now it's more Independent Radio as the slogan if you will although some older Arizona's Alternative ID's might still be in the ID Folders. Core Music hasn't really changed much over the years, but with the addition of additional programming, specialty shows and such the slogan has changed a bit to better reflect the station as a whole. While KWSS likes to think of itself as an "Alternative" to the big stations, it was confused to much with music style and our specialty show host would get flack for not playing "Alternative" Music. So Independent Radio it is. But really a no win scenario with a name when you have such vast programming LOL... Nothing has changed with ID's and positioning since the 103.9 change as far as I am aware.
