OK Let's have some fun

With the stuffed shirts from CBS radio in town today, let's have some fun. It is no secret that CBS is looking to buy the two Clear Channel stations that the DOJ ordered sold for the company to go private. Let us assume (I know it dangerous) that CBS buys Mix 96 and Mega 101.
What if any changes will be made? Will the formats stay the same? How many people will come over? How will the sale effect the Houston market? If at all.
My guess is that no major changes will be made in the short term. Perhaps some tweeking of the formatics on Mix, but in the short term no major changes.
What say you.

Make Mix into Jack, than maybe someone can hear it decent.

Word is the CBS folks have been talking to the people at Mega, which could mean they'll keep that format if they can work a trade with Clear Channel to swap stations. Clear Channel has in the past been very fond of the Mix format so they may want to keep it, but so much has changed at CC over the past year they may not be so fond of the format anymore, I don't know...

There's no relation between CBS Radio and Cumulus.

flip KIOL back to a rock station! :)
is anybody playing the new Guns and Roses in Houston? (not that I care or want to hear anymore than I have)
does CBS have any decent rock stations?

Mix should stay with CC since that was the original "Mix" station.

In a cluster strategy, Mix probably won't change much. KKHH probably has an 18-34 female appeal, so keeping Mix in a 25-54 female demographic makes sense. I see three options for KLOL:

1) Stay the course. Mega seems to do well in ratings and revenue; besides 92.5 in Tampa and 99.1 in Washington D.C., does CBS have other Spanish language stations?

2) 101.1 "The Fan" - All Sports - CBS has shifted several Sports formats to the FM Band (97.1 in Detroit and recently 105.3 in Dallas/Fort Worth). This would be a good male demo format and would more than likely knock 790, 97.5 and 1560 out of the Sports format. One question I do have is Houston a strong enough sports market to put the format on a 100KW Missouri City stick?

3) Bring the Rock format back to 101.1. This will probably illicit a few comments, but a PPM Friendly 18-34 male format would compliment the CBS Cluster. KLOL would have to hit the Buzz from the Active side and KKRW from the harder classic side. That approach may work, but resurrecting Rock Stations has not worked very well for K-Rock in New York, WYSP in Philadelphia or KEGL in Dallas/Fort Worth so far.

I'm stickin' with my original thought that CBS will pick-up the two CC stations here. I have it from a fairly reliable source that Dan Mason was in the Clear Channel building here in Houston recently. I can't imagine any other reason for that!

Formatically...if the two properties are billing well (which is what it is all about), then I wouldn't touch a thing (except for a little tweaking here and there). There are, however, several possibilities if they do want to change a format or two.

Boston, New York, Chicago, Philadelphia...these are "sports" towns. Houston is NOT a "sports" town. Don't put another "sports" station on the air in this town, and for God's sake, don't waste FM bandwidth with any kind of 24/7 talk!

Yes, Dan Mason was in town yesterday. At a townhall meeting he announced that CBS would be buying the two stations. He expects it to be a done deal sometime in March or April. They have to do a build out in the current location.

This is going to be a done deal. CC doesn't want any trouble from the Justice Dept.

The two stations do "Very" well in terms of billing. Even though Mix almost never makes the top 5, it's still one of the most recognized station monikers in Houston.

You won't see CBS turning either one into the CBS FM of the south. Specially here in Texas. The listeners just aren't there. Just look at K-Hits. How many tweaks have they gone through since dropping the "Oldies" from their name. Listeners to this format are just not there in Texas. Specially with their very short playlist. It's soooooooo boring to listen to anymore.

They'll keep the formats just as they are as long as the money keeps coming in on a regular basis.
