OK NOT THE POPE HIMSELF -IT'S CATHOLIC RADIO

Yesterday I wrote a story about Pope Bennedict and a vist to San Francsico and it was deleted by the board editor.

Ok the story about the Pope visitng here and him running into Kenny from Concord and Vern White was totally made up. However the point of the story is all true.

Many of us including Kenny and Vern White would love to hear Rock N' Roll Oldies on 1260 KHz. and not another religious outlet. If they and myself had some influence we would prefer the Bay Area's next religious outlet to be on a different frequency with all due respect to Catholic Radio.

Since we are in the broadcasting business, adding a flare to stories makes life more interesting. In the story that I embelished it should have been easy to read in between the lines.

There are two lendedary frequencies here; 610 KHz, the former KFRC which is now Family Radio and 1260 Khz. which was the original KYA.

The ending queston still remains........will the Pope's followers make the walk up Candle Stick Hill and get the keys to the building?

I hope that the foregoing meets the approval of the board editior, so let's get some responses on this important issue and station.

That was a made up story? :)

Actually, I'd prefer it if CBS leased 106.9 back to Family Radio and Family Radio LMA'ed 610 back to CBS...

Newsperson, wow sorry i missed your post, send me what I missed! Yes your 100% correct, At 54 years old I hope that KYA1260 would come to life again, We are already blessed with KFRC 610 for Religon, I feel like we are getting cheated out of The Format that the Bay Area is in need of! I listened to 14 mins of The Wolf, today, just not for me, Then i tried KOIT, Didnt do it for me!!! I would hope someone could put a deal together to Bring one of the Greatest stations back, Friday on XM the 60s channel and Terry Motormouth Young are Bringing back KYA1260 ,1pm till 6pm, Theyve got "EVERYTHING" that Verne has , Plus alot of Chris Edwards. Gene Nelson, And Tall Tom Campbell, All the jingles, and commercials from the 60s! XM does a great job of re creating 60s stations!! Kenny in Concord

What? Does Verne "Chris Edwards" White work for XM Radio, TOO? Fernando in Firebaugh.

BossRadioDJ,

CBS is prohibited by the FCC from owning any more stations that serve the Sacramento area. KFRC places a 2.0 millivolt signal over Sacramento. Back in 2005 Infinity had to sell KFRC before closing on the purchase of KOVR- Channel 13 in Sacramento.

Infinity could have sold their 93.7 Mhz. Class B1 licensed to Roseville, however Joel Hollander who was making the decesions at that time decided to sell KFRC without seriously considering selling any of the Sacramento area FMs.

Kenny,

In the story you run into Pope Bennedict while he was searching for the Candle Stick Radio Tower ( the original KYA) you knew what his format objective was (catholic radio) so you purposly mis-lead him to the KSFO towers up north in that rough neighborhood.

Later the Pope finds his way back towards Candle Stick and he runs into Verne White. As we all know Verne has also desired to bring back top-40 oldies to KYA. So Verne convinces him to check out the KDIA 1640 Khz. radio towers in Albany.

Unfortunatly the wheels have turned and it seems that the original KYA may be gone forever.

In regard to KOIT-AM 1260 it does have wider frequency response than other AMs and punches through well. It's good to hear some oldies on the station except for the low-key announcing and when they go to a Celion Dion song you want to open the window.

I also notice that KOIT-AM does get a 0.1 to 0.2 in the ratings which helps a new operator. In regard to Catholic Radio they operate on donations and do not care about ratings.

For the past could of years I worked on this deal, however I was never able to find anyone with captial that believed in the concept of full-service radio that includes music on AM.

AM 1260 would need to be run by an independent operator becasue if it was part of a larger group it would be treated like a step-child or worse.

It can stand on its own!

So where do we go from here in finding a facility so that we may carve out an audience to serve this need?

Newsperson, thanks for the reply, as far as KYA ever returning, I would gladly pay , to have 1260 KYA back on the air, I pay for 3 Sirius subs and 4 XMs, If it was, and it seems like it is about money, I will give, to have radio as it was! With gas approaching 4.00 a gallon, to have KYA in my car, I would probably drive more! Too bad Verne White, couldnt get XM or Sirius to carry his station to allow us to enjoy KYA in the car! KYA has a much larger playlist than XMs 60 channel, Theres gotta be some way to get KYA back up and running! Im sure not everyone is listening to the Wolf, and KOIT, or KIOI, theres a huge hole left here since Movin came on!Kenny in Concord

XM Radio said: "I hope that KYA1260 would come to life again."

Why?? Nostalgia? I'm not particularly an audiophile, but modern FM hi-fi stereo sound is so superior to AM that I doubt I would listen to Classic Hits or Oldies on either frequency, unless that is really all there was. Why should bible-thumpers get to hear their talk in high-fidelity while we hear music in low-fidelity monaural? Putting the format on AM would just condemn it to a slow death, but having it back on FM might give the format a few years of success until the advertisers decide we boomers are really over the hill. By the way, ratings just out for K-Earth 101 (FM, please note) in LA are up. LA's once very successful AM Oldies outlet - KRLA - a heritage Top 40 station once the unofficial "sister" station to KYA - has been gone for at least 5 years now.

CBS could do so much more with either 99.7 or 106.9, why go backwards? Besides, "The Big one-oh-six-nine" sounds a lot like "The Big six-ten."

Newsy,

I didn't say they should *buy* 610 -- I said they should LMA it. But heck, there's as much a chance of that happening as there is of CBS switching 1550 and 106.9 to Oldies and MOViN' the KFRC calls over to them.

Or (dramatic pause) is there?

Re: OK NOT THE POPE HIMSELF -IT'S CATHOLIC RADIO Dan Mason?

Only and I mean "Only" Dan Mason knows for sure what is going to happen in SF and he's not talking! Yet!Time will tell, but its not going to anytime soon. KFRC returning what a fantasy, give it up already not going to happen this year or next! But do dream on eveyone! Do what you gotta do! KYA is history and will remain history! Save those Airchecks and enjoy the real thing!

I'll politely disagree. Mike Preston knows, too...

Yes AM 1550 KFRC along with either FM would be a dream. KYCY as KYOU and and I-POD station was Joel Hollander's dream. Now that he is gone and Dan Mason has taken his place this could change.

1550 as KYOU does not make money when it broadcasts I-Pod shows.

So maybe there could be a change beacuse the status quo is not going anywhere.....hmmm

What are your thoughts.

BossRadioDJ, Question, On the LA Radio Info,, it says KRTH is #2 in the Winterbook among 25-54 person, It goes on to say Gary Bryan and the entire airstaff are cookin! Why is it a Oldies station works in LA but not here? Its a No brainer Gary Bryan has talent which far exceeds Parker and Blackstone, but its more, why do advertisers throw money at KRTH, but not KFRC and their format? One post mentioed thet played 649 titles one month, KFRC didnt have half of that did they? Gary Bryan has come along way from the Jumbo Jack days at KYA1260 in 1976, and he made it really big here, with none other than J.Paul Emerson, then KFRC terminates him here, Puts on Dean Goss and Erin Garret April 1st 1996! and takes his Super Morning show to LA and its #2 now Gary Bryan has done quite well!Kenny in Concord

My thoughts are: the CBS stations in this market (except for KCBS) are crying out for a change, and Mason has got to do something. Free-FM and MOViN in particular have both had their chance to grow, but nobody is listening. Any thought that either station will grow an audience if given more time is a fantasy. The Winter Arb rating for MOViN is even lower than before., and lower than the prior Arbitrend..just a tenth of a point higher than Gospel KDYA-AM out of Vallejo. Free-FM fares even worse. The return of a Classic Hits format (KFRC) seems like an easy, obvious move - either on 99.7 or 106.9. If they want to do it on the cheap, all they have to do is download the old Classic Hits playlist (or K-Earth's playlist, for that matter) and dig all of the old jingles and imaging out of the storage closet. A 1550 AM simulcast seems irrelevant. If they really think "Free" deserves more time, they can move it to 1550 and call it "Free-AM" or "Radio Free San Francisco." Nobody will care anyway.

"Why should bible-thumpers get to hear their talk in high-fidelity while we hear music in low-fidelity monaural?"

Right.

If we were listen to anything in mono, why ... we'd only have one ear!

Hi All: Yes I Newsperson and others have talked and tried to workout something on 1260 but the fact is Bonneville is NOT HURTING for $$$$ and will probably let it sit until they get the right offer.
If Doug Sherman IH Radio (Cath radio king) were mormon they would donate the station to him and write it off!!! LOL
I and my group are still looking for a home to do KYA in the bay, have a few possibilities at nearby FM's and AM's but nothing really that looks like more than an lma/we want to purchase something any Ideas????????

Also just to clear up a post I am not involved with XM at all Yes I have negoiated with sirius and xm but while they are in so much limbo they are not adding outside vendors such as my kya station the one at www.kyaradio1.com. I have struck a deal with Palm to be imbedded in all treos and with Apple on their new Iphone which will be out next month on att formerly cingular. This will help FYI if you have a palm product aka Treo we are already on and have been for some time, we are getting a few listeners but not many of them are as crazy about radio as i am to plug the treo directly into my input jacks in my cars and listen as I drive down the road. BTW I listen to KOMY the same way

Maybe CBS radio should re-launch the oldies format on 99.7 FM and then launch a new Country oldies format on 106.9 FM!
My parents would love that! Any thoughts!
