OK, Now He's Definitely Leaving

I never saw the point of Randy or a number of others on that show. They looked like hip-hop weirdo's and never said anything of substance. To hear that he is/was some kind of record big cheese didn't impress me in the least. They all look pretty much like TMZ fodder.

Um...'big cheeses in the record industry' are who weeds out trash from treasure. Remember that fellow Simon? Somewhat of a big deal at a firm called EMI.

TMZ Trash is minaj, spears, lopez and carey.

I think his point is that he never saw Randy do any of that.

I will definitely not tune in next season if Justin Bieber is named as one of their new judges, as rumored.

Let's face it, if they put in Bieber, Gomez, and some rapper name P. Diddy on, their ratings will dramatically drop and the next season would be as worse as this season ratings wise. Older viewers can not tolerate Justin Bieber or Sean "P. Diddy" Combs.

Imagine teenagers running this show? It would be RATINGS SUICIDE!!

American Idol will not be the same without Randy Jackson... :-[

Remember, older viewers don't count, and Biebs not only brings the kids but their moms as well. If that's the lineup, though, Idol will have officially become a self-parody.

I was a huge fan of Idol until Simon Cowell left. I tried watching it the next year, but it wasn't the same. I don't think I've seen an episode of "Idol" in three years. I watched "The X Factor",but knowing it was Simon's show, it also fell flat with me. I know "The Voice" is doing well, but to me it seems every contestant sounds the same...great voice, big high note. It's the same old same old.

I'm not sure anyone has quite identified what's really needs to be addressed about Idol.
It's pretty simple really: they need good judges who can find good PERFORMERS.. not just great singers.

Anyone remember when this show had 37 million people watching each night? Did the contestants just get up and sing in once place then wait for the judges to say something? No. They moved around the stage like a real singer would do. (Taylor Hicks, Kelly Clarkson, Casey Abrams) They had all kinds of interesting and entertaining performers.. even some of the bad ones you wanted to watch. (Sanjaya, Kellie Pickler) This year they had several AMAZING voices.. but none of them were very good performers. They were often doing nothing more than simple moves or walking down stairs. I don't think ANY of them went into the audience or behind the judges like many contestants (Adam Lambert) did in the past.

The 4 judge panel does not work on this show. It's too many. Get 3 and stick with it. I'd love to see Jimmy Iovine, Harry Connick Junior and maybe someone as blunt as Madonna or Pink. Put that trio up there and I'll bet they'd find some real talent.

Correct. I should have been more specific although I don't think much of Simon either.

Ryan Seacrest Also Leaving "Idol"? (Was: Re: OK, Now He's Definitely Leaving)

Look for host Ryan Seacrest to also leave "American Idol". I can't see him staying with the other on-camera cast gone.

And he could end up replacing Matt Lauer on NBC's "Today Show", with Lauer probably moving on to an NBC/Universal-produced syndicated daytime talk/variety show that would premiere in 2014. Were Seacrest to do this, he would have to give up all his radio work. But "Today" might be too good a challenge to refuse.

If Seacrest (or anyone else) replaces Lauer, the question is when does the transition take place?? In August, to give Seacrest (or whoever else replaces Lauer) a month as co-host before the "official" start of the 2014/15 TV season?? In September, just as the new TV season starts?? Or right before the Winter Olympics in Sochi ("Today" is scheduled to originate from there during the Games) so he gets a larger-than-usual audience that watches "Today" during the Olympics?? Or (much like the succession at "Tonight") right after the Olympics so Seacrest's (or anyone else's) move into the co-host slot can be plugged during the Games??

Personally, I am convinced that Lauer will be leaving "Today" within the next 9-10 months and will reappear in September, 2014 on an aforementioned NBC/Universal-produced syndicated daytime talk show.

Besides a clean sweep with new host and judges, I think Fox should give "Idol" a two-or-three year hiatus, with the show returning in the 2015/2016 TV season with a new host(ess), new judges, and a significantly-changed format.

But if "Idol" comes back next season without Seacrest, I wonder if Fox Sports' Erin Andrews might become the new hostess. She certainly has name recognition not only from sports television, but also from magazine ads and TV commercials for Cintas, and is one of the few sports TV types whose name and face are well-known even to those who aren't sports fans.

...so if you were wondering what made the music industry what it is today... ::)

Exactly! Watching Simon and his "unbelievable" expression when Susan Boyle sang on the Brit version of the show I'm guessing he had nothing to do with getting her on stage. I don't know if he has had anything to do with her career since then but she obviously had the talent prior to any involvement by him.

He has brought nothing positive to the show or to the music industry IMHO.

Two words, Joseph_Gallant: FORGET IT!!!!

The Voice and Dancing With The Stars have been flattening Idol to a pancake in the ratings, and it's prudent that the only way to end all this hurt is to pull the plug.

Also, Ryan Seacrest with his millions and millions of dollars ain't migrating to the East Coast. Can you imagine American Top 40 originating from New York (or Atlanta, where he was born)? He recently established his own radio studio in Los Angeles, so there.

Oh, by the way...remember "The Jane Pauley Show"??

"AI" is still a top five show most weeks and a top ten show every week. If those are pancake ratings, better get out the microscope for NBC.

Johnny A2K6:

I had noted that if Ryan Seacrest were to take over "The Today Show", he would have to give up all of his radio work, including "AT40"..

I can't see Fox cancelling "Idol", but I think the network should rest it for a couple of years and bring it back during the 2015/1016 TV season with a new host, new judges, and a greatly-changed format.

By giving "Idol" a hiatus for a couple of years, the show could come back and get a few more seasons.

Were "Idol" to come back next season, we'll probably be talking about its cancellation one year from now (May, 2014).

THAT is the basis for your argument? You think there is anyone on the planet who notices where a syndicated weekend radio countdown show is based? Please. I hate to break it to you, but the vast majority of these syndicated countdown shows are produced in pieces...starting with the voice talent's home studio to lay down their tracks.

Back to the topic, I don't see any reason for Seacrest to leave Idol. It's easy money and is the reason he is who he is. I would suspect as long as the network wants him around (and there has not been a single word mentioned to the contrary) he'll be there. That being said, it's no secret that Lauer and the NBC brass are not seeing eye to eye. Seacrest would be a viable choice for a replacement, and most importantly would likely bring down Today's demos a bit. He's missing the hard news credibility that job requires, but that can be easily acquired over time.

Seacrest does Idol on Fox, the New Year's Show on ABC, his morning radio show, AT40, does some stuff occasionally for Today on NBC, and has his own production company. He'll probably tell Fox when he's ready to leave Idol rather than the other way around.
