...how does one who doesn't have actual on-air personality type dj experience get started in that industry. any of you out there have a clue or could anyone lead me in the right direction for such inquiries? let me know... thanks guys...
A couple of ways come to mind, depending on your age. If you are currently enrolled as a College or High School student, this is the time of year that most local Radio Stations are hiring interns to work for them in exchange for course credit. It's a great way to get your feet wet and experience the day to day goings-on behind the scenes. Some people call this legalized slavery, but if you are serious about getting into radio, be sure to show the staffers that you are willing to work hard. Making a positive impression may lead to a future opportunity.
If you are not a student, there's always the Connecticut School of Broadcasting. They've got campuses in Hasbrouk Heights, New Jersey and Westbury, Long Island. The instructors are local radio pros, plus they often have guest instructors come in to teach their specialty. It's pricy, but if you really apply yourself, you can get a head start on a career in the industry as they've got working studios that you can use to hone your skills, especially from the production end. Best of all, the studios will always be available for you to use, even after graduation.
Just be forwarned, as many of the posters on this board will attest, YOU WON'T GET RICH WORKING IN RADIO!!!!!! Best bet is for you to work in Radio part-time to get your thrills and have a full-time job to pay the bills! That's about as much as I can offer by way of advice. Hope it was helpful!
