power 95.3 in Orlando definitely the worse and they call themselves a hip-hop station but majority of their playlist is pop. and its a tight playlist on top of it. They only have 4 hour mix show during the weekend on a Sunday evening mixing top40. i still don't know how they are beating 102 jamz.

Plenty of crossover songs does not equal 'majority pop'. Power953.com allows you to see its playlist, and I chose to take a look at what the station played today (Friday, July 22nd) from noon to 4pm (ET). Here goes:

12:04 p.m. Don't Matter
noon Motivation Kelly Rowland f. Lil' Wayn

I can agree that this is a fairly tight list. But the majority of what's here has already been on mainstream urbans nationwide. I don't see any Ke$ha, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Gym Class Heroes, Jason Derulo, Black Eyed Peas...

Some of ya'll really need to drop the 'one right way' theme that every urban or rhythmic CHR ought to sound like.
Yeah Ja Rule's Put it on Me was catered to Mainstream Urban & Rhythmic's in 2000 along with Always On Time in 2001 and Nelly's ft Kelly Rowland's Delliema in 2002 but over a period of time those hits crossed over to Pop radio. Nelly's Delliema also crossed over to Urban AC and was a hit on R&B/Hip Hop stations such as KKBT & KPWR and Urban AC's KJLH & KHHT Hot 92 Jamz. Sorry for my nostalgia. I love those songs. ;)

either too heavy on R&b or too conservative on hip hop,,, or just overall bad presentation and imaging...

magic 103 in Kansas city

Jamn 94.5 boston

95.5 The beat Atlanta

Hot 98.1 Senaca South carolina.

107.3 in Toledo...

Power 98 WPEG in Charlotte. Way too heavy on the R&B. It sucks because since we lost our Rhythmic, WPEG is the only station in town playing hip-hop. You pretty much have to listen in the evenings, like between 6pm and 8pm if you want to hear current hip-hop. The rest of the day it sounds like an urban AC with a few currents sprinkled in.

Would you say KKFR is better or worse than WJMN?

Does anyone remember when "the sign" by Ace of Base was huge on WJMN near the mid 90's?

I totally do! :D I also remember hearing Celine Dion on that station! I don't know if it's the worst, but it's definitely the most schizophrenic!
Sounds like a low budget station to me. What hip hop station would play Celine Dion ??? Soft rock doesn't belong on a hip hop station. These stations you mention need to be blessed with dayparting. Celine Dion on a rap station YIKES  driving me koo koo for coco puffs. The ballads that make to hip hop stations are mainly R&B ballads such as Babyface When Can I See You, Ruff Endz Someone to Love You, Kenny Lattimore For You, Jesse Powell You, Joe All The Things and Eric Benét Femininity ,etc if the hip hop station has a quiet storm program.

KKWD in Oklahoma City played "Only Time" by Enya back in 2001, so it doesn't surprise me that a poorly-programmed rhythmic would play Celine Dion.

From my assessment of Power 98 is it's clearly dayparted on weekdays. Actually the station plays mostly hip-hop on weekends it's 90% hip-hop and 10% R&B if at all aside from the songs current charting on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop. Most CBS-owned urban stations are dayparted.

There was a pop verison to that song Enya did in 2001. I remeber hearing it on KMXV Kansas City during that time. KKWD plays alot of pop so it can compete with KJYO so no surprise. During that time they were on 97.9FM

KMXV was/is a CHR/Pop station so yeah they would have played Enya. KKWD was a CHR/Rhythmic during a time when rhythmics, unlike today, played very little pop and sounded almost indistinguishable from urbans. The station was also very sporadic in terms of the pop they did play and it didn't quite fit, i.e. Enya sandwiched between Lil John and Ludacris. They did the same thing in late 2002 when they put Complicated by Avril Lavigne into heavy power rotation, months after the song peaked on most CHR/Pop stations.

Neitherless it work for them. KKWD was never billed as a Hip Hop station but still targeted black listeners but cleary the station is for suburban teens. OKC Hit Music Channel. During that time the only choice for CHR music was KJ103 and Hot AC KISS. Urban KVSP was on AM. Me personally I enjoyed the station when I would visit during the summer in the early 2000's compared to the conservative crap I heard in KC on KMXV and wannabe Rhythmic KCHZ before Cumulus took over in 2004. Only thing that I hated about KKWD was Triple the Music. They played Sir Mix-A-Lot Baby Got Back like it was a new song in 2000. But Im not surpised since OKC hasnt had a strong Urban station since KAEZ flipped to Classic Rock in 85

Agreed. KKWD as it was probably wouldn't have worked in most markets but as conservative as OKC is it worked well, and I think it was number 1 in the market for quite a while. KKWD was also pretty edgy by OKC standards back in the early 2000s. It was competing against a very conservative KJ that would edit rap verses out of songs and edit curse words beyond what the official promo only radio edit did. KKWD gave OKC a taste of urban radio without jumping in with both feet so to speak. Its branding as a "Hit Music Channel" fit the market even though its playlist was more like that of a "Party Station."

And I remember Sir Mix-A-Lot being played a lot. They played Hypnotize by Notorious B.I.G. in the same manner.

Yep and they stuck with it no musical tweaks or nothing. I also remeber in 2001 they were heavy on Missy Elliott Get Ur Freak On. Surprisely they played The Isley Brothers Contagious feat. R. Kelly in September of that year which was a surpise to me. Plus the DJ's were funny on the station too. I remeber visiting one time during the early summer of 2001 and one the dj's was broadcasting live from the Kansas State Fair saying how boring it was. You dont hear that much fun in radio anymore but I nearly choked on my soda laughing so hard. But I still stand my ground KVSP is the one of the worst Mainstream Urban stations

Thats surprising. KJMM in Tulsa, also owned by Perry, used to be pretty good.

You can hear KJMM in Tulsa. Either in the house or the car because the tower is actually in the city. KVSP you can only hear in the car no house reception unless you live in Anadarko, OK or Lawton OK. Perry has two stations with the same format targeting Lawton KJMZ and KVSP. It sounds like a college station. KJMM to me has a Urban Contempary sound vs KVSP having a Mainstream Urban sound.

wdb2003, KKBT played Isley Brothers Contagious in 2001 and that song you told me about called Tears and it wasn't produced by R. Kelly, Babyface did. R. Kelly produced the first single of the Mission to Please album called Let's Lay Together. Let me stop before I annoy you with my history reports lol ::). I remember KKBT 92.3 The Beat playing Isley Brothers Let's Lay Together. It's no suprise to me. How are people in my age bracket going discover these old R&B figures.
