OK, WWZN Can Swith To ESPN Deportes

OK, it's all over. WWZN-AM 1510 Boston can jettison progressive talk and Jeff Santos can go on to some other vanity project. Current TV has announced that the channel will simulcast the Bill Press and Stephanie Miller radio shows a la Don Imus on the Fox Out-of-Business channel. The former will be heard from 6:00 am to 9:00 am Eastern time; the latter from 9:00 am till noon Eastern time. The shows are supposed to start simulcasting in a few weeks. I ordered Current TV from Comcast last June for Keith Olbermann's show...Comcast actually LOWERED my rate if I agreed to a two-year contract, so I'm all set.

Interesting development for Current TV. As for radio, I know you're joking but most people mistakenly believe ESPN Deportes is simply a Sports Radio network for Spanish-speaking audiences. That's not true.

It's a Sports Radio network for Mexican-American Spanish-speaking audineces. It really is of minimal interest to Spanish-speaking audiences in Miami, NYC or Boston, where most Latinos trace their heritage to the Carribbean. Deportes covers U.S. baseball and football in season, maybe some basketball. But it spends a lot of time on soccer, including the Mexican soccer leagues. That's of no interest to Hispanic audiences from Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic or Cuba. There is an ESPN Deportes outlet in Miami but it barely makes the ratings, despite Miami being one of the most Latin of U.S. markets. The network is mostly heard in the West and Southwest.

OK. Santos has been around for a few years. He's seen growth. Things seem to be going well. So, when does a "vanity project" start to qualify as success? Or, is "success" only ever applied when the correct flag is being carried?

Santos' "sugar-daddies" buying more time on more stations hardly qualifies as "growth"....It simply means there's more dedication now than ever to "spread the gospel" of Santos.

When does a "vanity project" start to qualify as a success?.....To me...that's an easy one....and it has nothing to do with idiology.

It's when WWZN starts PAYING Santos to be on the air....not the other way round.

At least WWZN has been airing Red Sox in Spanish for awhile now and will probably continue, as part of the mighty three-station Spanish Beisbol Network. The other 2 Sp. lang Sox stations are
WCEC 1490 Haverhill and WNEB 1230 Worcester according to

I don't think WNEB 1230 in Worcester will be airing Red Sox in Spanish anymore seeing they're now a Catholic formatted station.

Ah; I was going by the page linked above. I see from the WNEB listing on Wiki. that after a brief period as cons. talk The Patriot, they went dark for a week, then to Sp. lang. talk with some
inspirational music; it was off again Jan-May of last year when it came back as Catholic
programming.

Really? So, did the FCC pay WWZN to be on the air? Or did WWZN make an investment to start a business venture? As so many people around here love to keep saying, "Radio is a business". What Santos is doing is just another business model. I don't see where it has any less justification.
