OK you Mayberry fanactics!?

A co-worker and I recently were talking about the Andy Griffith show and the characters in Mayberry. The name Mr. Shrumb (?) came up. He was the guy always in the stag line at the dances and social parties with the bad toupee. He never said anything. Just smiled and nodded. Do any of you tv junkies know who he was? Was he a member of the crew that they put in as a joke? Maybe a relative of Andy or another cast member? I won't sleep tonight thinking about this. I went to the usual websites and there is no mention of him in the cast. Thanks for any info.

I have never heard this name before nor do I recall such a character. I did look at a cast list from the various seasons of the TV series, but there is no name such as list listed as a character. Was it in the earlier years of the series? It might be helpful to list which episodes this character appears in.

As I said I did try to look it up on various sites but did not find him in the cast listings. I don't believe he had any spoken lines, maybe that's why. He was in, maybe five episodes, all B&W. One I recall was when Andy & Barney tried to dress up Ernest T. Bass and take him to a Mayberry society party. Another one I recall, I think involved the good time girls from Mt. Pilot. Andy & Barney were suppose to take Helen & Thelma Lou to a dance but the girls broke the date. Barney said he wasn't going to go and stand in the stag line with old man Schrump. He would be on the street in crowds and Andy or Barney would say hello to him.
