No numbers quoted; just the poop...

Froggy: their highest SC share in a decade
3WZ: highest share in 4 or 5 years
Bus: steady as a (classic) rock
WOWY: Maybe they let go of the wrong one...
Lite: Back down to where they were before
Hot: Looks like Hot 107.9's old numbers
Quick: Cut in half--even with PSU & Steelers
RSC: Don't need no stinking sports!
MAJ: Damn near caught RSC
GMR: lowest cume in station history?
Buzz: almost disappeared
BLF: did disappear

It was an interesting book to say the least. I guess the only thing that can be said is that aside from Froggy and 3-WZ, I do not think ANYONE ended up where they hoped to be. Country always has been strong and I suspect that will not die anytime soon. But it seems that nearly everyone else suffered to a degree. Does anyone know where a bulk of the diaries actually ended up? I know in the past a few too many that get sent "out in the sticks" can make or break how things sway. Seeing how Qwk was cut in half, that would tell me that perhaps those books went further out where the 98.7 signal may not be as strong?

Just glad I am not a gambling man. Would have lost a ton a million times over years ago trying to make predictions. 6 months from now, we could be staring at something totally different all over again. You can pretty much bet Froggy will be the top of the heap...and other than that...its always anyone's guess. Gotta love this crazy biz huh??? At least every day is different than the last.

I haven't seen anything but 12+ numbers, which don't mean much to me.

Which is why I think doing ratings books in State College the way they do is completely irrelevant.

Stations would be better served if they partnered with a local respected institution (oh, let's see I'm thinking someone like PENN STATE...?) to utilize their marketing students to compile a comprehensive survey of a population sampling in Central PA & release their findings to stations who will then brand the data as being from PSU. This supports a local university & I believe most advertisers / supporters would value that research far better than Arbitron.

So what if the national ad buys prefer the Arbs? Is that where most of the ad dollars come from??
______________

Would this be something you could get PSU to do for FREE or would there be some sort of financial arrangement made?

I would say if a college could do this as a project for their marketing students it would paint a nice picture how radio is working within the local community & could spice up a Public Inspection File.
______________

Where the bulk of the diaries went

The bulk of Fall diaries went to the "State College Split"--234 diaries. Only 204 went to "Centre Remainder." So the majority were in town, not in the sticks.

"Penn State Radio Research?" Not likely, for several reasons. PSU would probably be reluctant to catch all the criticism that Arbitron gets from the losers--and there are ALWAYS many more losers than winners. As licensee of WPSU & WKPS, the university would also be perceived as having a conflict of interest. And all hell would break loose if the Nittany Lion football affiliate happened to do well in one of their surveys! Way too many problems...

Re: Where the bulk of the diaries went

...and further more I would want the students at Bellefonte Beauty College to do my research not Penn State - they're use to hairy situations.

I'd hardly call that breakdown a majority. 234 in town to 204 out of town, that's nearly a 50-50 split so yes, a few of those books "in the sticks" sure could make a difference.

I knew the sample size was small, but never realized HOW SMALL. Does anyone else think its odd that 438 people account for the tastes of over 40,000+ permenant local residents? That is just a little more than 1% of the population. 1.095 to be precise (assuming 40,000 people and its actually more than that)

Hard to believe

It's called a popularity contest in many circles and you just demonstrated the reason of the season. Peace....

What Would Webster (dictionary) Do?

A "majority" is defined as: "The greater number or part; a number more than half of the total."

So unless you want to dispute the dictionary, you MUST call the breakdown a majority.

Note- off topic

Completely off topic - does anyone from Nittany Media monitor WKVA? It was off the air for 2 hours one time (end of Dec 2005). Pissed me off that I couldnt get any oldies for awhile (pap wouldnt let me use XM in the car).
______________
