Imagine my surprise when I go to News 92 yesterday afternoon, and hear some talk show about politics and finance. This happened around 5pm Saturday. Is this a one off, did they run out of folks to work that day, or is their promise of "100% news, 0% spin" already forgotten?

Okay, so what happened to News 92?

I don't live in the Houston area, but it sounds to me like one of those paid-for weekend programs that many news/talkers have to fill their schedule; the stations gladly takes the money from the folk that produce the show.
Could be that 92 just doesn't have the $$$ to "fly" as yet.

they are running some of the ABC radio network shows over the weekends, was this one of them? Tried to check their scheduleon their website for News 92, but the site is down for maintenance this evening.
OK, get real people...they are carrying the full news hours on Sat and Sun mornings but during the dead hours on Sat and Sun afternoons, they are carrying long-form news analysis and syndicated financial programs BUT STILL HAVE NETWORK NEWS AND TRAFFIC/WEATHER CUTINS for the limited audience who may be listening at these off hours. Note that News 92 FM did carry the Republican debate Saturday night and that's commendable as the other "news" station quit carrying news events live ten years ago...
Still thinking about 13K when KXYZ 1320 dropped beautiful music in 1975 and went AC, carrying ABC's Entertainment Radio network AND live all major national news events...the concept was a grown up Top 40 with news catering to adults. You would think a station whose billboards tout "tune in for breaking news" would carry news events live...especially since their audience of 70 year-olds would be deemed to be adults by most standards.

Bad precident to interupt the All-News format for either long-form programs or worse, infomercials. Houston has no shortage of Talk stations. If you promise All-News, that's what you do, 24/7. When I wake up in the middle of the night and turn on the hot water, I don't expect apple juice to start flowing. When I turn to a Top 40 station, I don't expect Beethoven.
Even carrying the Republican Presidential Primary Debate is not smart, in my opinion. Carry the debates between Mr. Obama and the GOP nominee, yes. But not a primary debate. We live in a 24/7 world. We might be in our cars and want to hit the news button at any time, day or night. News should be there whenever we want it.

They replay 2 of Sunday morning's news shows--NBC's Meet the Press and ABC's This Week with Christiane Amanpour. These were promoted on-air.
The Republican debate was an ABC News sponsored debate and they are an ABC Radio affiliate. Sounds reasonable to me. They didn't carry any of the other networks' debates.

Guys-it's not the long form news stuff I was commenting on, it was the call in talk show I heard that caught me off guard. I was under the mistaken impression that News 92 was a news station, and ran no talk shows per se. Long form news interviews, stuff like that, I can deal with and accept. But for talk, there is the AM band for that programming.
What is News 92 running overnight? How many hours of per week are they having long-form news analysis and syndicated financial shows on the air?
Have they started airing infomercials? What happened to the all-news 24-7 they promised? Even hear WBBM in Chicago is carrying an occasional news analysis show on the air but News 92 may be doing too much of this for an all news 24-7 radio station.

I believe overnights is Jim Bohannon, also a talk show but it's not one of those polarizing opinion programs.

It should be pointed out that WBBM in Chicago airs "When Radio Was" every night at midnight. Of course, it is only an hour, Radio Spirits' home town is Chicago and no other CBS-owned all-news station carries the show. (And they still run CBS News at midnight with the :03 cutaway and traffic and weather updates in the stop sets.)

Of course CBS news stations such as WCBS, WINS, WBBM, KCBS, KNX and KYW are heritage operations that have been at the news genre for decades. And all are 50kw AM blowtorches. Doesn't hurt that most of those markets are full of longtime residents who are rather set in their habits and world view.

Yup, it's Radio One, a company that has had its share of financial problems recently. That is why many of us were surprised that they wound up being the owner that took the all-news plunge. It's an expensive format with no guarantee of success in this market. If it is a huge ratings success, you'll see overnight coverage added. But don't hold your breath.

I think CBS will sit back and let News92FM be the canary in the coal mine. Why commit $$$ in trying the format when you can let someone else possibly lose their shirt?
One thing that hasn't come up here: If News92FM is a moderate success ratings-wise, but a financial albatross for Radio One, CBS could always buy the station--they have room for one more FM under the market cap. Under such a scenario the format could even be moved to one of the other CBS FMs in the market, or simulcast on one of the CBS AM stations here.

That and WBBM carries every Bears game on Sunday and WCBS in New York carries every Yankees home game and that has done squat to hurt them in the ratings.
I think people are getting too worked up over this.
