Oklahoma, Texas FM's heard in NY

Four new logs during a bit of an opening Friday evening (7/7) here in the Hudson Valley, NY.

A very lucky logging at 5:50pm. I was monitoring 88.1 for skip and KNTU McKinney TX faded in with a male announcer giving his name and clearly giving the KNTU-FM calls, then fade out. No music heard, no announcements, nothing else at all. Despite another 30 minutes or so of listening, this was the only FM E-skip noted at this time on 88.1 or any other channel. It was enough for logging Texas #18. 1397 miles.

Later in the evening, I tuned in to 88.1 (around 7:55pm) and believe it or not KNTU was heard again!! This time a female announcer, and the signal was quite steady, with back announcing of a Charlie Byrd recording, slogan “The One” and other talk and music.

Other new logs Friday night.

8:20pm KIQX-102.5 Joplin MO “Continuous Country - Kicks 102.5” with local spots including mentions of Miami (OK) pronounced :”Mia-mah”. Missouri (Missou-rah) #20. 1147mi.

8:30pm KJYO-102.7 Oklahoma City, OK “All of Today’s Best Music - KJ-103”, with spot for Celebration Station in Oklahoma City. 1338mi.

8:51pm KHBZ-94.7 Oklahoma City, OK with long spot break, including promo for “Oklahoma River Wake Board Competition” Oklahoma #16. 1338 mi.

This opening was characterized by generally weaker and relatively few signals, but also surprisingly stable signals… sounded more like tropo with none of the quick choppy fades. This was especially so for previous-log KYIS-98.9 “Kiss-FM” heard at various times this evening.

Let's hope for some more FM DX this weekend!

How are you computing your distances? Just wondering....

My distances are the "great circle" distances from my location to the station's transmitter tower. I use an FCC website to calculate them: http://www.fcc.gov/mb/audio/bickel/distance.html.

You need to know your own latitude and longitude (I figured out mine some time back from various maps) and that of the radio tower. I get the radio tower coordinates from http://www.radio-locator.com. These could also be gotten from another FCC site: http://www.fcc.gov/mb/audio/fmq.html but the radio locator site is a bit easier to use.

OK. I was just wondering because some people use distances that aren't even "as the crow flies". I have a geodetic distance program that I use that gives the distance and azimuth. I'm sure it's similar to the program that you use.

Hey great Catches there. The Furthest FM I have been able to ID was WIVK 107.7 out of Knoxville. Now TV is a whole another animal I have caught FOX2 out of Honolulu Very difficult to catch but with enough patients you never know what you might catch.
