Old 98.7 tower in Greensboro

When did they take down the old 98.7 /WPET AM tower? I was driving on I40 this afternoon and came up on the Elm St. exit and noticed that it was gone. I haven't been through there since September, but if it was taken down prior to that I must have just missed it.

Chris

i brought this up about 3 months ago. from what i heard this is what went on and a little history behind that site (this is what i've overheard, witnessed, read, etc if there is anything someone can or could add. please do so):

.that tower carried a set of Phillips Dodge FM bays up top for WKSI (untill the early 90's)

.a new tower was built out on Wall road, in southern Guildford County back around '93) WQMG 97.1 and WKSI 98.7 moved out to this site around the same time.

. untill last year WPET 950am used this tall tower on Meadowview rd. as well. However they moved to a shorter tower closer to downtown at the end of last year.

.since last year WCCB Inc. owned the tower, i guess waiting for WPET to move. come to find out WCCB is the FOX outlet in Charlotte.

.the tower was taken down during the spring of this year.

.i miss that 730' landmark

on a lighter note WGHP (FOX 8 ) built a new HD tower out in randleman, nc...been there, done that, seen that....very impressive.

That tower was put up in 1979 for WRQK-FM. June 23, 1985 the station became WKSI (KISS-FM). They later moved to the B-100 tower (Now WVBZ) off 220-South. WPET was on that tower till just over a year ago. WQMG is the only station on the tower off Hwy 62. You don't need to look it up. I was there when the WRQK/WPET Tower went up.

;D Damn Wes..You and Willie are older than coal..Anthracite at that!! Boy I'm One to be talking!!

i agree with it all except....that right there ^^^. unless you mean that's where they moved to before they went out on the wall rd. site.
Hang on. Let me confirm what I know....radio-locator.com agrees with me and..the FCC database agrees also...WSMW up top, and WQMG mounted below that...I know for a fact this is who occupies this tower right now, since i was just out there not long ago. at the base of the thing, before they built a new fence around it.

although i did see something interesting when i was out there that day. there wqas a Rock 92 sticker right ON the tower at the base, like right on the steel. looked like it has been on there for at least 10 years it was very ragged and faded.

Hey Big Ape! Some of us have got to hang around to keep the youth of radio educated! We are a part of TRIAD radio history! An proud of it! Some will argue with that! One day a kid called me up to tell me that Paul McCartney was in a band before he was in Wings. Now that made me feel old. Go ahead....throw some more coal on the fire and keep those great radio stories coming. Larry Allen has some pictures of the tower @ 221 West Meadowview Road being cut down. I'll post if or when I get them. Larry told me that a police officer was at Florida and Randelman when he saw the tower fall and rushed over thinking it was an act of terror. By the way just saw where The Godfather of Soul James Brown died this morning! Another legend gone who put some electricity in the air waves. Rest in peace "Godfather"

Merry Christmas!

Wes

Carloss: I stand corrected. They were on the tower off 220 till they were purchased by Entercom a few years back ,who own's WQMG. I did not remember the move but it makes sense not to pay rent to CC or whoever own's that tower. I don't claim to know it all just what I can remember. Don't put a lot of trust in radio-locator. They had the 94.1 site listed in Rowan County up for a few months and that was just an application. Never got to move. But we have all beat that story in the ground. After all as Big Ape said I am old as coal. Thanks for the info. I have learned something today! That makes it a good day!

Merry Christmas!

Wes, I wasn't being insulting when I made those comments. I love you and Willie to death. By God we were radio in the Triad when there wasn't any. And anyone that thinks that they has radio now is FOS. Back in those days there was a dedication to the business. If someone said something bad or good about the station, everyone took it to heart and did something about it. Today's canned jocks do not have any idea what it was to be a radio man back in the 60's and 70's. remember hearing stories about announcers being in trouble on the air and saying something and in a matter of minutes there would be pickups of people with shotguns at theb station to defend their favorite person..I doubt if that happened at the "Penthouse RQK but it sure did at Orange Park, Fla. The old DAYS ARE GONE BUT OUR MARK WAS THERE! p. s. iF YOU DON'T KNOW WHO i AM..ask Hal or Sid! Merry Christmas ......

wes, its all good. i wasn't tryin to be a smarta$$. was just throwing in my .02. :)

and Marry Christmas to all...

hey, who's ready for a present from good ol' Clear Channel ?? ;D

Carloss and Big Ape...I was not insulted or offended. Did not mean for my replies to sound that way. I enjoy reading these boards, and learning. I got a kick out of the old as coal comment! It put a smile on my face. No you did not offend me. Guess I was just trying to point out that it was WRQK before the KISS era. Worked with some great people then and still do now Their passion fires my passion for this business.

I think at one time Bernie Mann owned that tower off 220 (B-100) - even after the stations were sold. Don't know if he still owns it but he did for several years after the demise of WWWB.
