He's probably gonna frame this post now. :)

According to well-connected sources over at Cleveland.com's Listening Party, WERE staff were informed that January 1, Radio One's urban news-talk format will debut on 1300.

OA stuck by his WERE thesis. I said it would be WJMO.

OA--you were right.

No word yet on what will happen to brokered stuff--they apparently are keeping some hours available (prob. post-7pm and weekends). Also, no word on what happens to OM Jim Davis. Maybe he stays on board after the format switch? (!)

I can't blame Radio One for the choice. But the only real big issue here: will WERE's terrible signal not become a disadvantage with the new urban talk format?

At least ol' 1300 will show up in the ratings for the first time since, what, 1994 (?!?) under CC ownership. That can't hurt.

It is also curious to see Jim Davis in this position...

Pardon me while I head out to the store to buy a frame for this one ;)

I'll be honest here, I was being swayed back to considering WJMO as the possible home for the urban talk format...by some of you folks! One reason I was doing so - Radio One is blowing up the brand new gospel format on WILD/1090 Boston, which just changed from urban AC (moving to at least daytime dayparts on their new FM in the market).

But unlike WJMO, WILD has no history in the gospel format. It's only been there for a few weeks, as the former WBOT-FM picked up much of WILD's history as WILD-FM. Meanwhile, WJMO's been doing gospel as long as I can remember.

In the end, it may not have been the music selection that sealed the deal here. Since their urban talk format will be primarily syndicated, maybe Radio One wanted to keep WJMO as a locally-oriented "community" station in the hours that WERE will be off the bird. And as mentioned, WERE can still sell the post-7 PM hours and weekends, which they've been pretty successful in doing...including, in recent history, some brokered talk shows aimed at the very same African-American community that'll be served by the new Radio One talk network.

It pushes stuff like the brokered standards block off the WERE daytime schedule, but overall, I'm curious A) how much Radio One loses $ wise by doing this, and B) if any of that stuff can be moved over to WJMO. (Standards on a gospel station? Maybe not...)

As far as WERE's signal, well, they have nothing better in the market (on the AM dial, that is). While the Cleveland Heights-COL'ed WJMO may be a little better at superserving the east side and much of the market's African-American population, I still get the idea Radio One wants to aim broader than that with the urban talk format.

Re: I Gotta Be Right At Least Once...

With Roger Brown's recent and always credible reporting that Mike and Mike are ratings dogs on 'KNR, I'm not ruling out the possibility that Salem doesn't make plans to sell 7p-10am on 850. Roex will pay a pretty penny for drive time.

Maybe a bit overzealous prediction on my part, but someone has to pick up the pieces, even if there aren't enough AMs in the market.

WERE's signal is very strong in Cleveland's HDBAs (Arbitron High-Density-Black-Areas), beaming a narrow, but strong, signal northeast from the transmitter in North Royalton right through the city and up into Lake County.

Their weak area is west around North Ridgeville, North Olmsted, and the western lake shore. How will their lack of signal in these areas impact the success of their urban talk format? No impact, since there are few African-Americans in those areas.

Yep, they COULD throw away morning drive to brokered crap, and dump the lousy M&M. Make a few bucks, too.

It could be a bit tough for the evenings, considering that Lake County Captains baseball will wind up in that said slot, obviously followed by Karlovec's "10th Inning" show from 10pm-12am. As long as WKNR gets enough sponsors for Karolvec, they wouldn't dump it. Treat it as brokered material.

After midnight? You bet. Who actually listens to the Rome rerun after 12am, for example?

Stick Roex there (if WERE doesn't keep it), follow it with 'American Advisor' and Mike Gallagher reruns, slide in Flash Ferenc's labor show at 6am, etc. You could get away with this crime!

Oh, yeah. 'Always Sports. Always.'

If Salem wanted to dip into the paytoilet some more, they could even look at 1420, which more than fills the bill on weekends.

Don't forget the 'mighty' WELW 1330-AM, either ;)
