OLD BUILDINGS ... gone!

Noticed this week that almost all of the structures that housed stations AFTER their early downtown appearances are gone. Was thinking about this as I was on Dexter and noticed they just bulldozed the Channel 22 startup headquarters (across stree from current CBS facility). Made me realize that other than stns who existed in various buildings downtown (Tower, Cobb, Seattle Tower, etc.) almost all those various interim facilities ... gone! KJR, KOL as stand alones leveled long ago, KOMO's original building is gone, KMPS' "other" Dexter ave. bldg is gone, KIXI/KYYX/KYAC home gone (now Benaroya), KXA, KZOK/KUUU bldg gone (now City Center), and so on. Then there's the whole issue of all the places we used to EAT and DRINK have also been bulldozed!

Yeah, it ain't NEWS ... but just offering a little historical reflection on the 4th weekend. Hope yours' is a good one!

Sadly - most of these stations are now housed in little more than strip centers - the unique, quirky and unusual are mostly gone.

or in closets...

If any of you are in Ellensburg, go by KXLE. It was built during the cold war/bomb shelter days. The ultimate brick latrine with a 1kw xmtr inside. Still sturdy as a rock..

...and the SUPER cool thing about KXLE? They were already on a Conelrad frequency (1240 kc.) So you better believe after those Soviets were done nuking Puget Sound to smithereens, there will be ONE radio station in the Northwest remaining loud and proud.......

KXLE is a station that has shown pure and simple reseliance during its entire time on the air. Big names have gone through that facility too, usually on their way out of the WSU broadcast school. That building is the ultimate in soundproof. You really couldn't hear a bomb go off outside while you were inside playing the hits. I'm not sure you COULD tear that place down.. I worked there during the John Dimeo era and it was the funnest damn gig I ever had. Being single and in a fully loaded college town might have had somthing to do with it however..It was also where I went through my first (of three) FCC inspection. Busted for an inoperative EBS monitor (which hadnt worked, as I understood it, for many months).
