Old Cable Lineups from Missouri

Johnson County, Kansas had Telecable and Kansas City, Missouri had American Cablevision, but what about Landmark Cable in Independence, Missouri or Six-Star Cablevision in Grandview?

I think by the time I was in Kansas City, Independence had Comcast.

Edit and correction: Jones Intercable bought Landmark Cable in 1986. Landmark also had the franchise for Olathe, Kansas.

Yes, I corrected my previous post. I had thought Comcast was somewhere in the Kansas City area but I haven't been able to confirm that from archives.

It turns out that Comcast bought out Jones Intercable in 1998 and closed the deal in 1999. That was after my time in KC.

they kept WGN for the upgraded areas, but that was also when they had to cut back on the Bulls on the superstation
In 1996, only Gladstone and a couple of areas had been upgraded. The rollout of the upgrade wasn't complete until 1998.

the TeleCable system (later TCI) was dual sided until it was upgraded when Time Warner Cable took over
The TeleCable system required running two coaxial lines to each household, with a Zenith A-B switch or converter being provided at the set top. Theoretically, that doubled the capacity of the system, but some channels, especially OTA channels, were duplicated on both the A and B lines.

Thanks for reminding me about this. We had a converter box for maybe a year or two and then got an A-B switch. I think it had two plastic buttons and you’d press down one or the other to get extra channels, right?

was KSHB blacked out during Fox programming?
No, it was the only Fox affiliate on the system. KRCG-TV in Jefferson City had a secondary Fox affiliation but carried relatively few Fox programs, and there was never a conflict between KRCG and KSHB.

When KSHB changed to NBC affiliation in September 1994, KSHB was dropped from the Columbia system and replaced by the "FOXNET" service. I don't know what happened in Moberly or Jefferson City, which also used the cross-state CARS-band relay system to import non-local channels.

I only ever saw the converter boxes; the A-B switch arrangement sounds like something one would get at Radio Shack.

I think Telecable might have rented them, but my dad might have gotten ours somewhere else. I remember my brother and I loved pushing down the opposite button when the other one was watching TV, to torment each other…. :)
