Old Casey Kasem AT-40 shows to WODS?

The other night I heard a promo with an aged-sounding Casey Kasem saying that Oldies 103.3 will be rebroadcasting old 1970's editions of his nationally syndicated "American Top 40" shows on Saturday evenings. I guess that's it for "Mighty Mike" Osborne's live and local "Saturday Night 70's".

I'm sure the shows will have nostalgia factor for the oldies audience who grew up listening to him every week in the 70's, but I can't see it getting the ratings of a well-executed live, local, interactive Saturday night 60's/70's oldies party show.

It's probably a package supplied at low-cost and mostly national sponsor supported (or perhaps even free and sponsored), so it will cost them a lot less to run it and pay a board-op rather than live talent (I don't think they use automation there). They're also running old Wolfman Jack shows Sunday nights at 11 PM (after Barry Scott's "Lost 45's").

Well, as the man always said, "keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars"...

And I thought the Casey was now spinning the tunes up in Rock N' Roll heaven. ::)
I do believe it is only an hour broadcast. We'll see.

XM Radio has been replaying AT40's for a while now.... ZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzz

Let me tell you some of those "top 40" songs really sukked.

I wonder what time thet are running it? AT40 replaced Barry Scott? HUH? You took Barry off for this crap?

Mighty Mike and the 70s show are still listed on WODS's site. Then again, they've never updated Barry's bio to delete his Sat Night Dance Party show.

No, Barry's "Lost 45's" is still on Sunday evenings. It said that the AT-40 rebroadcasts will be on Saturday evenings.

ahhh they pulled Barry off of saturday nights a few months ago and this is what they are replacing him with?

So now we will have lost records and songs not on the ODS playlist on saturday night?

So much of the 70's music was sheer fly attracting schit it's not that the songs are lost, someone put them away for a reason. The Billboard top 40 chart is full of such songs.

Then there are the "classic rock" songs that ODS won't touch that are all over the top 40... Anything by Boston, Aerosmith, etc come to mind.

The plug I heard said AT40 would be Saturdays at 11 P.M.

is there any radio time period that is more of a black hole besides saturday night after 10 to say 9AM sunday?

This is interesting, because I actually remember the now-defunct Z100 (no, not the New York one, but the old one based out of Middletown, RI that used to be on 100.3, I think it's a Spanish station now) used to air old AT40 reruns from the 80s. I actually heard that it was nationally discontinued, because, apparently, less than 100 radio stations in the country were carrying it.

???

10 on Saturday night? Is that a typo? People are on their way to the clubs!

How about 12 AM - 5 AM on Mondays?

There are two versions of this show, the 80's reruns and the 70's reruns. Likely, the 80's version will end up on sister Mix 98.5 (the Adult Top 40 station here which is modeled after Mix plays the 80's shows on Sundays, since they go all 80s eveery weekend). I'm guessing that WODS really didn't have a time slot for the show, but took it anyway, to block WROR from getting hold of it, since the 70s show really fits in better with their format than WODS's. I would bet that the time slot where it least gets in the way (and where it probably wouldn't hurt either) is after 10 on Saturdays.

Just guessing though...

One thing I find interesting is that this is really the resurgence of Casey Kasem, since he's clarely still cutting production to promote the reruns, and since the reruns seem to be gaining stations. He is also still cutting 2 other shows, a Top 20 and a Top 10 show. I'd say sit was backlash from people unhappy with Seacrest, but his show airs on the same station out here.

The "American Top 40" episodes from the 1980s also air on XM channel 8 each Sunday at noon. They even leave in the snippets when he says "American Top 40 is heard in the 50 states and around the world on great radio stations like..."! It's too bad that 1989 can't be a part of the presentation, since Shadoe Stevens was hosting it by then. :(

Maybe it's just the radio-geek in me, but I actually try to listen to the 70's "AT40" on XM. I like it.
Sure, every now and then there's a song that you have to cringe at, but overall, it's harmless fun.

Just finished listening to WODS's airing of the 70s version of American Top 40 with Casey Kasem. It was a 2 hour condensed version featuring the top 27 songs of a week in June 1977. And it was a horrible editing job. Either that or there were streaming issues as I was listening online.

The show started right after Mighty Mike's 70s show with #s 27, 26, and 25. Then a commercial break, then #s 24 and 23, then another commercial break, then we heard the same thing we had just heard which was Casey introducing #24 again. However, the song was cut short and a commercial break came on and then some music came on and I had no clue whether it was part of AT40 or something WODS decided to play. This happened more than a few times over 2 hours.

At one point, sometime between #s 19 and 17, three songs were played (Just One Look, Romeo and Juliet, and You're The One That I Love) that apparently had nothing to do with AT40. Then Casey eventually came back with #17 and 18 was missing completely. Again, this happened a few times.

There was also alot of dead air throughout the 2 hours. Again, I dont know if this was just from online streaming or if it also showed up on "regular" radio as well. Anyone??

I did take notes and, so, for your enjoyment, observation, and discussion, here are most of the Top 26 songs from June 1977 (I THINK it was the week of June 8th):

27 Ariel - Dean Freedman
26 When I Need You - Leo Sayer
25 I'm In You - Peter Frampton
24 Couldn't Get It Right - Climax Blues Band (Biggest drop of the week at 14 notches)
23 High School Dance - The Silvers
22
21 I Just Want To Be Your Everything - Andy Gibb
20 Slow Dancing Don't Turn Me On - Indresi Brothers (?)
19 Do You Wanna Make Love - Peter McCann
18
17 Margaritaville - Jimmy Buffett
16 Da Doo Ron Ron - Shaun Cassidy
15 Looks Like We Made It - Barry Manilow
14 Heard It In A Love Song - Marshall Tucker Band
13
12
11 Jet Airliner - Steve Miller
10
9 Sir Duke - Stevie Wonder
8 I'm Your Boogeyman - KC and the Sunshine Band
7 Lonely Boy - Andrew Gold
6 Desperado ?
5 Lucille - Kenny Rogers
4 Feels Like The First Time - Foreigner
3
2 Got To Give It Up - Marvin Gaye

And...the #1 Song in the Land...

1 Dreams - Fleetwood Mac

Sadly, there were no long distance dedications ::)

However, I'm sure you will all be happy to hear that AT40 was heard on "great radio stations" like WVUV in American Samoa; WCMC in Elizabeth City, NC; KBEQ in Kansas City, MO; WDRC in Hartford, CT; and WFMU in Fairmont, NC. Also something in Indonesia but I didnt get it.

Ed McMann of Boston/Kiss108 and voicetracking fame ended the program with some credits.

Their streaming is funky. I try to listen to Beatle Brunch on sunday morning online.... headphones and a laptop . When they go out to commercial they come back with fill music and eventually join back up with the on air programming, just in time to go to commercial again...

Most of your list is songs that are put away for a reason, only heard on Barry Scotts show or on the Rhino records "Super Hits of the 70's" 26 disc set, or songs ODS doesn't play.

There are one or two I know they play.. Fleetwood Mac, Buffett, but the rest?

You people don't know those songs that were listed above?....come on now....who put a question mark next to "Desperado"?....are you serious?...you don't know who sings that song?....WOW
