Old CBS-FM Commercial from 1983

Bill Brown on VO duty. I remember this spot as a kid and it was probably my first introudction to the station when I was 8.

The irony is that the song clips on these commercials sounded better than they did on the station itself. By the late 70s WCBS-fm had miserable, muddy on-air sound. Their carted music was dull with recessive highs and rough thumpy bass. They used some sort of noise reduction, probably DBX which causes emphasis of any tape imperfections producing a "grainy" sound. Some songs such as "I Got You Babe" and "I Go To Pieces" sounded as though half the oxcide had flaked-off the tape. I remember hearing many of these same songs on the oldies based AC, WYNY in the early 1980s the difference was beyond dramatic. This went on with minor improvements 'till they went to digital storage sometime in spring 1996.

Its a testament to how much mediocre audio people will put up with to hear their favorite songs and DJs.
