Old Fashioned CHR WAR!

A few months ago I posted that a Mainstream CHR War was about to take place between KLSY and KBKS. I am no iknowitall, and a lot of people bashed my post,
but look what has happened. KLSY has gone from a 1.4 share this winter up almost a full point to the mid-two share range in the last summer trend. KBKS
has gone from the mid-four share range last Fall down into the upper two's. In fact for six straight months KBKS has dropped while KLSY has grown.

Folks, this battle is far from over, but the two stations are neck and neck.
It will be a fun one to watch. Even KUBE has slipped into the four share range as a result. I am not saying KLSY or KBKS will win this one, but each are
spinning the Gorillas, Papa Roach, Mariah, Natasha Bedingfield, Ryan C. exclusively in this market and up to seventy times a week. This is the CHR
battle of legend. One will emerge the victor. I wouldn't write either station
off at this point.

When was the last time KBKS was in the two share range 12+? KLSY is finally out
of the one shares and into contention. Let the war continue!

Good battle. Too close to call. Whatever happens MIX
made the smart move to vacate the battle with KPLZ and
KRWM knowing that JACK would beat them all. Going younger
protected MIX from JACK and let them go after 18-34 where
there is less competition and the audience moves quick!!!

One gets the feeling Mr Shorts (the GM) is gaining
faith, bolstered by good numbers MIX is now adding Black
Eyed Peas, Frankie J and other rhythmic acts to help the attack in
the 18-34 arena. 25-54 KBKS and MIX are not players and don't care.
The battle is for 18-34 and secondarily teens.

Bet MIX is glad they went young and are going up against KBKS instead
of the tidal wave that is JACK. Poor KPLZ, KRWM, KBSG. They are going
to have a tough time of it while JACK is hot.

Let's hear it for a Seattle CHR War!!! Let the best station win.

> Good battle. Too close to call.

Oh please.

Look a little deeper. KBKS has definitely taken a hit but not as a result of KLSY. If you look a little deeper, every trend that KLSY has gone younger has cost them numbers. They are damaged goods. Have you listened? The entire staff is second-rate, in some dayparts third or fourth.

My money is on KBKS to bounce back and KLSY to remain lost, unfocused, and knee-jerk into their next incarnation.

Looks like the folks at KBKS are more than just a little worried. PUCKER UP MIKE and KISS THIS. I got my lips gloss on and I'm ready for ya !

Really? How do you come up with the assumption that folks at KISS are worried?

Again, let's see....Mike Preston, a market veteran with experience in New York City versus Bill West, a guy who came from Huntsville, AL.

As for an "old fashioned CHR WAR"...please.

Z-100 vs. WPLJ, KIIS-FM vs. Power 106, Q105 vs. The Power Pig....THOSE are "old fashioned CHR WARS." KLSY isn't even a blip on the radar.

KLSY is closer to an unfocused, scrambling for anything radio station more than they are suited for any kind of 'war.'

Really? How do you come up with the assumption that folks
> at KISS are worried?

1. At staff mtgs the Kiss krew and staff are talkin bout how Mix is a "fly in the ointment" Dogging them at events and promotions on the street. Up staging them left and right.

2. Ratings. You can't deny KISS has lost numbers. Spin it how ya want in your polly anna world fact is there was a real change at 925 and it is reflected in the #'s and the music !. In some day parts Kiss has been smoked by the Mix staff. I know you got the 411 AQH so you tell me where KISS got BEAT THE MOST.

3.When the OM /PD starts trash talking to the lables, and flat out making decpeitve comments about his competator to industry folks...that there tells me he's worried. If he feels he must take such actions and lie that shows his true charater.

4. KLSY not a blip on the radar huh.....that's cuz you aint usen' SONAR fool.... MIX is commin' up to submarine and torrpedo'em so get the right gear -
and then you'll hear !

5. Mike Preston, a market veteran with
> experience in New York City versus Bill West, a guy who came
> from Huntsville, AL.... See it don't matter where you come from it's what ya got inside. I love folks who underestimate people. Like my Grand Daddy always said...It's not the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog! Bow wow wow yippie yo yippie yeah!

Oh and AQH I think Mike needs another cup of coffee.
Edited by mevans on 09/28/05 05:38 PM.

Odd, I don't recall hearing that at any staff meeting. Which one were you at?

I was going to reply to your earlier message, but I think this says it all about your credibility.

Indeed. It still seems strange to compare KBKS and KLSY in the same sentence...I'm pullin for KBKS they know the game...KLSY...can't even call that a full CHR really can you? Are they still calling out their competition in their imaging? I know last time I was in Seattle there they had callers bashing on star by name...

Well then why don't you enlighten us Obi - Wan and set it str8 - Fact is KBKS is hemoraging listeners. Quick some one get'em some gause and stop the bleeding.
Fact 2 KLSY is not a CHR. A progressive HOT ACHR that is stripping away Presto's upper end because they don't want to hear Fiddy cent evey fawkin 20 mins yo - ya feel me dawg ? And Finally Mike has been runnin his mouth like he got legs for lips talkin bad about them to everyone and anyone who buys his line of crap-ola.... er is that Krayola - don't matter all the same. I'm bout to pinch this off, wipe and be done w/ you.

Next...................................

He's right, read the extraps

YoSlick is right...anyone who actually subscribes to ARB and can process extraps knows that KLSY has lost at least 35% 12+ and 45% 18-34 since June... along with amazing 53% drop 25-54. When June drops off, the talk of a country flip will suddenly reappear..

Re: He's right, read the extraps

I know I sound like a broken record, but extraps are
worse than trends. They are unweighted, adjusted and
erratic at best. At least a trend is a three month
rolling average.

I have found this whole thread fascinating. KLSY has
been in trouble for some time, but have turned their attention
to KBKS and the net result is KBKS is down substantially. Whether
it is KLSY, KUBE, JACK or someon else is unknown.

That said, KLSY is not much better off. They have given up the
25-54 women, it appears, to KRWM, KPLZ and JACK. They have grown
18-34, but advertisers will sit this out and let the dust settle.
KUBE, KISW and KNDD are solid 18-34 buys and are not under attack.

Let's see how this "war" looks one year from now. Basing success
on a trend or two, much less an extrap is ridiculous. Let KBKS
and KLSY battle for at least two books, then declare a winner. I
don't know the PD at KBKS or KLSY, but where you come from is not
the issue, it is how well you perform here, in Seattle, that counts.

If you knew me, you would understand the irony of that statement.
