Old KAMC 28 LOGO!

Didn't KAMC used to be KSEL?

Because KSEL radio formed the MacAlister Broadcasting Corporation, I believe.

Bill MacAlister and his dad, who was a state senator from Lubbock.

You are correct: KSEL signed on November 12, 1968 and is now KAMC. Apparently, the calls were changed sometime between signon in 1968 and 1979, as the FCC began tracking information in their database that year, and their database has no record of the KSEL calls on the station.

A little more background infomation: At some point KSEL's calls were KMCC, according to the 4/21/79 issue of the West Texas Edition of TV Guide. At the time KMCC operated channel 12 in Clovis, which at that time was known as KFDW. KMCC of course became KAMC, and gave the KMCC call letters to KFDW. A few years later KVII in Amarillo would takeover the operations at KMCC which became known as it is today as KVIH.

I'd forgotten that KAMC used to be KMCC and that it also used to operate the channel in Clovis.

Now this is a very very long time ago, yet I remember when KLBK TV had both CBS and ABC programming, before KMAC or KMCC started carrying
exclusive ABC programming.

Fox 34 in Lubbock used to be a completely independent station, years ago.

Back in the 60's Channel 34 was an indy and then spanish and then it went dark.

That's right! They were located on 50th Street, right off of Avenue U. They had a local program with Paul Archinald hosting it, with a Nautical theme. Captain Foghorn or something like that.

I wonder if Fox 34 has the same license as the original KJ?

They don't. The originial license for channel 34(known as KKBC/KMXN at the time) was cancelled in the early 70s. When KJTV signed on in the early 80s they applied for a brand new license.

Yes, that is correct Ron (of course, you were here when that happned, right?)

By the way, it sure is nice to see KAMC as a full power station now with their HD signal (finally) up. First time I've been able to watch them here with a perfectly clean pic near Tech without the use of any cable or antenna what so ever! Same for 13, of course...

Well, I wasn't HERE....I was about 28 miles east of Lubbock in Ralls. One more thing I remember, when Judge Don McBeath was the weather guy for KMCC's er KAY-MAC 28's ACTION NEWS TEAM. I also remember KCBD's EYEWITNESS NEWS, and KLBK'S NEWSCENTER 13.

Wow, what a different time that must have been?
You wouldn't happen to have any TV airchecks of any of those, would you? NewsCenter 13 is the only one I was actually here for (in fact, it was still called NewsCenter 13 when I started working there).

Sorry, no air checks. The building maintenance guy here brought up a two LP set that KSEL TV & Radio put out around 68 or 69. It was really cool. Had pictures of all the old jocks and of the anchors or anchor, Bill Maddox, pictures of the radio and TV studios were shown throughout. Pretty neat piece of local nostalgia.

Wow, that'd be something I'd really like to see!
Which reminds me, do they still have all that historic KFYO stuff up in the hallway?

I no longer live in Lubbock, yet I find it so odd for one company to own both KAMC TV and KLBK TV. I know the FCC has pretty much thrown out the rules of cross media ownership or whatever it is called, yet for one company two own two TV stations in one market, a small one at that, seems odd.

No doubt...It was really hard to watch both when they first got into the same building. Touting everything as "Texas SIZE". KAMC moved their 6pm newscast to 6:30...So in effect if you missed a story on KLBK's 6pm, you could turn on 28 at 6:30 and see it again...just with a different anchor team. Pretty much how it is now, just they realized they weren't foolin' anyone around here with that Texas size thing and rebranded the stations as seemingly separate entities.
